She didn't trust anyone's words. She still remembered that night on May 8th, when she didn't have a place to stay in Jing City and was renting a small shared apartment.
There were three people sharing the flat, and after finishing work, she had to take the subway for two hours before catching a bus. After getting off the bus, there was still a distance she needed to walk. The neighborhood was filled with shared apartments, and since she got home late, the street leading to her complex was dark and lacked streetlights. Every night, she would call Shu Ran just to feel safe.
That evening, she was talking to Shu Ran as usual on her way home. Suddenly, a van appeared beside her, and a man got out quickly. He moved fast, grabbing her arm and dragging her towards the van. Yun Li was strong; she immediately hugged a nearby thick utility pole to buy herself some time and screamed for help, hoping someone would hear her since many people were returning home from work.
The man, frustrated, yanked her hair hard to pull her inside. Yun Li cried out in pain, and soon enough, people from the neighborhood came out to see what was happening. Seeing that he couldn't drag her away, the man let go of her.
As the crowd gathered and watched the van drive away, Yun Li was left trembling in fear. She knew those people had been deliberately arranged to intimidate her. She ran home, terrified, and sat on the floor of her tiny bedroom crying. The room was small—just an 180 cm bed that felt narrower than a school dormitory bed, a wardrobe, a small desk, and a tiny balcony; that was all there was.
It felt suffocating, as if she couldn't breathe. Perhaps having lived a happy life until then made this sudden turn of events feel so surreal—she couldn't understand why this was happening or how it could come to this. It was far from what she had imagined.
Suddenly, her phone rang. She answered it while trying to suppress her sobs, just like usual. "Hello! Dad, is there any progress?"
Yun Zheng only told her to resign and leave Jiangzhou.
"What happened?" she asked.
He didn’t answer but urged her to hurry up.
Yun Li realized that there were bigger forces behind Team Leader supporting him. She sat on the floor for a long time until her roommates arrived; they were chatting in the living room with laughter that starkly contrasted with the oppressive atmosphere of her small bedroom.
She pulled out some beer from under her bed and started drinking it down in large gulps, finishing three or four cans in no time. As she looked at the table, she noticed a pair of scissors in her makeup box.
She was in pain, unwilling to submit, and filled with resentment. She couldn't understand why this was happening to her. She had always believed that her ability to withstand pressure was strong, yet in the face of overwhelming power, she felt fragile and vulnerable. After two years of struggle, she still couldn't overcome it.
She locked herself away at home, nearly taking her own life. It was Shu Ran who rushed over, broke down the door, and stopped her from going through with it. Awakening from her daze, she threw away the scissors and embraced Shu Ran, crying uncontrollably.
Shu Ran took her to her home, where she stayed for several days. During that time, she showed no signs of life; her complexion was poor, and her mental state was bleak. She felt as though the place she longed for had crumbled around her. The sanctuary she once revered was now filled with a nauseating stench.
On May 10th, she received a call from He Lin Cheng. He had uncovered improper dealings between the Team Leader and the Principal, along with evidence of bribery. The police had found her man just before he was nearly kidnapped; he had been beaten to near death, one of his hands broken.
It turned out there were two people involved in the crime: one drove the car while the other captured victims. An investigation ordered by higher-ups revealed irrefutable evidence, leading to the downfall of both the Team Leader and the Principal, with the Vice Captain quickly stepping into a new role.
She also received apologies from the former Principal and Former Captain. But she did not forgive them; she filed a lawsuit. In that moment, she felt light finally shining upon her.
The collusion between the Former Captain and the former Principal had been very secretive; when this news broke, no one believed it. How did senior He find out? She had asked him about it. He merely said he discovered it by chance and had been gathering evidence over the past few days.
She didn't think much of it at first, but now it seemed more complicated than she had imagined. Seeing those photos and tickets stirred no emotions within her because she had already known. In fact, it even struck her as laughable.
As she looked at one particular ticket, she felt a wave of confusion wash over her.
