"I'll leave it at the door, you can come out and get it later."
Yun Li glanced at the message but didn't reply. She went into the bathroom to blow-dry her hair. After finishing, she felt sweaty again; summer really made everything feel sticky.
She picked up her phone to check the time—it was past seven. Peeking through the peephole, she saw no one outside. Gently opening the door a crack, she looked left and right, still no one in sight. Then she glanced down and saw a takeout container of Spicy Hot Pot.
She brought it inside; it was from the place she often ordered from downstairs. After a moment's thought, she decided to eat it—she was genuinely hungry. Eating so late could easily lead to weight gain, but the Spicy Hot Pot was small in portion, filled with plenty of vegetables, and had hardly any meatballs, which were usually the culprits for weight gain. There were just two purple sweet potato balls.
There was also a bit of hot pot noodles, perfectly spicy—just how she liked it, with a mild heat that would leave her feeling satisfied without overindulging.
After that, Jiang Shiyu really didn’t show up again. With National Day approaching, Yun Li planned to go home; she missed her father's cooking. In Jing City, she mostly ate at the cafeteria or out at restaurants, and she longed for the flavors of home.
Once her work was done, Yun Li packed her things and took an evening flight home. It was already past ten when she arrived. She had eaten dinner on the plane, so when she got home, she went straight to bed.
Lying on the soft bed felt blissful. The next morning, she was awakened by Deng Ting's voice.
Deng Ting knocked on the door and called out, "Hao Hao, get up! Let’s go out for breakfast!"
Yun Li glanced at the time—it was just past nine. She yawned; she had gone to bed late last night and had only recently started sleeping better, but it was still hard for her to fall asleep. It had been nearly two o'clock before she finally dozed off.
Yun Li got up and tidied herself up a bit, applying simple makeup. She wore a light-colored top paired with denim shorts and tied her hair back in a low ponytail, looking just like a college student.
Yun Li stepped out of the room and headed to the kitchen in search of something to eat. She found some leftover buns from breakfast that Deng Ting and Yun Zheng had prepared. She stuffed one into her mouth; although the bun was a bit cold, the warm weather didn’t deter her appetite.
“Mom, Dad, where are we going for lunch? Do we really need to leave this early?”
“We’re going to your dad's chess friend’s house for lunch. He’s all alone at home, with his son and grandson abroad. Your dad just wants to keep him company,” Yun Zheng replied.
“Oh,” Yun Li said.
As she sat in the car, Yun Li looked down at her phone. He Lin Cheng had sent her a message at seven in the morning: “Good morning!”
“Good morning, Senior,” she replied.
“Looks like the bed at home is too comfortable; you’re still in bed,” He Lin Cheng teased, adding a smiley face.
“Are you planning to spend your National Day holiday at home?” he asked.
“I might go out with friends,” she responded.
A few seconds later, He Lin Cheng sent another message: “I’m thinking about traveling but can’t decide where to go. How about I come visit you? I’ve never been to Jiangzhou.”
Yun Li paused for a moment. She knew that He Lin Cheng was trying hard to get closer to her. They had agreed not to avoid each other anymore, and she was ready to face it openly.
“Sure! I’ll take you around Jiangzhou,” she replied.
Their conversation flowed easily as the car soon turned into a courtyard. Yun Li didn’t pay much attention until the vehicle came to a stop, and she looked outside. The buildings were familiar, etched deeply in her memory; the old villa she hadn’t seen in a long time stood right before her eyes.
“Dad, is your friend Grandpa Jiang?” she asked.
Yun Zheng unbuckled his seatbelt and nodded. “Yes! Uncle Jiang and I have played several games of chess together. You wouldn’t know him since you weren’t home.”
“Oh, right! You know his grandson—the guy you met when you started university some time ago.”
Unbeknownst to Yun Zheng and Deng Ting, the boyfriend she had mentioned before was Jiang Shiyu.
