For several consecutive days, Jiang Shiyu came to pick her up after work. He held a strong hostility towards He Lin Cheng, and whenever the two met, the air crackled with tension.
Yun Li couldn’t avoid him forever, could she? She decided to either leave later or arrive earlier; she didn’t believe he could catch her every day. That evening, she left at eight o'clock. She peeked outside the main entrance and saw no one. Feeling a bit relieved, she stepped out, only to hear a low voice behind her, laced with a hint of laughter: “Are you sneaking away?”
Yun Li tensed and turned around, discovering him leaning against the wall, perfectly positioned in her blind spot. She let out a quiet sigh of relief and retorted, “It’s quite creepy for you to be here at night.”
Jiang Shiyu walked over, his gaze fixed on her face. She looked fresh and clean, as if she had just washed her face, her hair tied back in a low ponytail. With a stern expression, he looked like someone not to be trifled with.
“Why have you been avoiding me lately, Yun Li? I’m pursuing you; can’t you at least acknowledge me? Stop hiding.”
“Not a chance. And stop targeting Senior He. He didn’t even get angry when you hit his car. You think just because he has a good temper that it’s okay to bully him? That’s pretty pathetic.”
Jiang Shiyu found her words amusing yet infuriating. “Yun Li, can’t you see why I’m targeting him? That brat likes you. If I could still tolerate it, I wouldn’t be a man.”
Yun Li tightened her grip on her bag's strap and looked at him with her beautiful almond-shaped eyes, calm yet piercing. “Can you not call him that? He has a name.”
“Feeling sorry for him?” he scoffed.
Yun Li shot him an exasperated glance, refusing to engage further. She tried to walk past him, but Jiang Shiyu grabbed her arm and pulled her closer. Their proximity made the familiar scent of him fill her senses, causing her to struggle immediately.
“Let go.”
Jiang Shiyu lowered his gaze at her up close but softened his grip slightly. Seizing the opportunity, Yun Li quickly pulled her hand away and took a step back.
Once again, she delivered a sharp retort: “What does Senior He liking me have to do with you? Don’t forget that between us, we’re nothing. At least Senior He treats me sincerely; you haven’t spoken one truthful word. By that measure, you’re worse than he is.”
His pupils constricted as shock flickered in his eyes, mixed with something else he seemed to be holding back. Clenching his fists tighter, his voice deepened with barely contained frustration: “So now you’ve really developed feelings for him?”
“Yes,” Yun Li replied coldly. Perhaps letting him misunderstand would be for the best; that way he wouldn’t cling to her anymore.
With that, she turned and walked away, while Jiang Shiyu hung his head low, his emotions swirling beneath the surface.
Zhou He Lin Cheng accompanied Yun Li to sign the contract and pay the deposit. Yun Li disliked dragging things out and urged the sales staff to expedite the process.
She paid in full without hesitation, and naturally, the sales staff didn’t delay any longer.
"Miss Yun, I'll notify you when the car arrives for you to pick it up." The sales representative greeted her with a smile, his eyes nearly squinting with enthusiasm.
Yun Li nodded and walked out with He Lin Cheng, who suggested they go out for a meal together.
Yun Li declined, saying she had plans to eat at Shu Ran's house.
He Lin Cheng didn't press the issue. "Alright, let's plan for next time."
On Sunday, Yun Li spent the day at Shu Ran's studio, sitting in Shu Ran's office while sipping coffee.
Shu Ran looked up from her documents and asked, "How's Senior He doing lately?"
"Pretty good. What can be different about work? It's just the same old routine," Yun Li replied lazily, sinking deeper into the sofa.
"I heard that Senior He and Jiang Shiyu are both pursuing you."
Yun Li was taken aback. "Where did you hear that?"
"Oh! Don't forget that I know all your colleagues."
"Stop snooping around."
Shu Ran set down her documents and stretched her sore neck. "I'm not snooping; I have evidence! They got into a huge fight and even damaged their cars."
Yun Li shot her a glance and adjusted her posture. "What huge fight? That's just nonsense."
"Whether it was a real fight or not, I still support Senior He. He has such a good temper and character; he's great all around. Hao Hao, you should seize the opportunity."
Yun Li thought for a moment and said, "I'll try my best! But I'm not sure if I'll end up liking him."
Shu Ran smiled brightly. "I believe Senior He is worth it. Good men should be appreciated early on; that's how you find true love."
As for Shu Ran's notion of true love, Yun Li had long stopped hoping for it. She didn't believe that love would ever come her way.
She had given up: "Can love fill your stomach? Whether I get married or not is the same to me. If I meet someone good, then I'll marry; if not, that's fine too."
Shu Ran, who had been lazily rubbing her temples, perked up immediately upon hearing this. "Hao Hao, how can you think like that? Marriage shouldn't be something you settle for."
