He was a man of upright demeanor, with good habits; he neither smoked nor drank, and he paid great attention to his health. His thermos was always filled with goji berries or tea, exuding a refreshing and wholesome aura. It was clear at a glance that he was a well-cultured individual.
"Senior He, would you like to sit for a while? It's still early. Why not try the tea my father left here? I don't know much about tea, but my dad says it's quite good."
He Lin Cheng glanced at the distant horizon, where the red sunset painted the sky. It was indeed early; sipping tea for a bit wouldn’t be too presumptuous.
The two of them got out of the car and walked towards the apartment building. Not far ahead, they turned a corner. They walked side by side, chatting and laughing.
Suddenly, Yun Li's gaze sharpened as she spotted a man standing at the entrance of the building with a dog. The man wore a black shirt and black trousers, his hair cut very short, which accentuated his sharp features. His deep-set Peach Blossom Eyes glared unpleasantly in their direction.
The dog in front of him bared its teeth and charged forward.
Yun Li's eyes widened in fright as she instinctively stepped aside. He Lin Cheng, experienced in such matters, also moved away. However, the dog was quick and agile, turning sharply to bump into He Lin Cheng.
Instead of biting, it barked furiously at He Lin Cheng, positioning itself in front of Yun Li to separate them.
Yun Li immediately looked at the indifferent man beside her. "What are you standing there for? Hurry up and restrain it!"
Jiang Shiyu finally moved his lips and approached. The dog settled down next to him.
He Lin Cheng could no longer tolerate being targeted repeatedly like this.
"Jiang Shiyu, are you really that childish?"
Jiang Shiyu merely pursed his lips, his voice cold. "As long as it works."
Yun Li could no longer hold back her frustration. "Are you sick? Is this really amusing to you?"
Jiang Shiyu's gaze fell heavily on her face filled with anger, and his eyes dimmed slightly.
He crouched down and gently stroked the director's hair, saying softly, "Good boy, you won't bite anymore." The director, sensing his loneliness, let out a small whimper and licked his face, as if to comfort him.
"You took the director away," Jiang Shiyu said, a faint sound escaping his throat. "See? I wasn't lying. Your mother doesn't want you anymore. She doesn't want me either."
Yun Li sometimes really didn't know what was going on in his mind. The director whimpered, his eyes drooping, looking utterly heartbroken.
"That's not how you pursue someone," He Lin Cheng reminded from the side.
Jiang Shiyu immediately curled his lips in disdain, his gaze icy as he shot back, "What does it matter to you how I pursue someone?"
"Of course it doesn't concern me, but you can't stop others from pursuing Yun Li."
This left Yun Li stunned, staring blankly at He Lin Cheng. Some uncertainty began to sprout in her heart.
Jiang Shiyu's expression turned even colder, a hint of hostility creeping into his brows. He stood up and slowly approached with the director in tow. "What do you mean by that?"
He Lin Cheng smiled lightly, his demeanor as refreshing as a clear breeze under the moonlight. "I'm also pursuing Yun Li. Since she no longer likes you, I have the right to pursue her too."
Yun Li's breath caught in her throat; her mind felt like it had exploded. To her, He Lin Cheng had always been like family. She never knew he actually liked her.
Jiang Shiyu tightened his grip on the leash, chuckling softly with a nonchalant expression. "Oh, I wish you luck in failing."
The tension between the two was palpable, and Yun Li disliked this atmosphere. She turned to He Lin Cheng and said, "Senior, don't waste your breath with him. Let's go!"
He Lin Cheng looked at Yun Li, his eyes revealing an unhidden tenderness.
Yun Li caught sight of that softness in his gaze; He Lin Cheng was gentle with everyone, but the warmth he showed her now felt different from usual.
Feeling a bit overwhelmed, she instinctively turned away.
To Jiang Shiyu, this held a different meaning. He clenched his jaw tightly, and the previously relaxed look in his eyes sharpened instantly.
He grabbed Yun Li, who was trying to walk past him, refusing to let her leave his home.
Yun Li pulled her hand away forcefully, her tone indifferent as she spoke, "What right do you have to demand anything from me?"
Jiang Shiyu watched helplessly as the two of them left together. That scene struck him deeply, and as the sky darkened, it seemed to envelop him in the night.
The air remained stiflingly hot; it didn’t cool down just because the sun had set. The leaves above were parched and lifeless, lacking the vibrant green they should have had.
The director tried to feign pity once more to win her over, but this time, no matter how much he whimpered, Yun Li remained unyielding.
