On the weekend, Yun Li and Shu Ran had planned to go watch a movie together. Yun Li had her hair styled in a fluffy bun, with wisps of hair falling softly at the nape of her neck. Her bangs were tucked behind her ears, giving her a clean and simple look. She wore a blue checkered shirt and high-waisted jeans, carrying a small leather bag as she walked out of the elevator. The sun was shining outside, making it pleasantly warm.
As she stepped out of the community, she looked down at her phone to send a message to Shu Ran: "I'm on my way now, don't forget the time." Suddenly, an urgent bark pierced the air, causing Yun Li to instinctively tense up and look over.
The tension in her eyes faded, replaced by a hint of surprise. The dog, Director, was excitedly bouncing in place, while Jiang Shiyu struggled to tighten the leash behind it, trying to prevent it from dashing forward.
Yun Li smiled at Director but had no intention of approaching. Suddenly, the dog whimpered and seemed to sulk as if it were crying. It stopped bouncing and began pacing anxiously. Jiang Shiyu bent down to pat the dog's head and led it closer but didn’t come too near.
Director whined sadly at Yun Li, conveying a sense of betrayal as if accusing her of abandoning it. Feeling somewhat helpless, Yun Li reached out gently to stroke Director's head and asked softly, "What's wrong with you?"
It missed you.
Jiang Shiyu explained that Director had been restless at home for several days. "His voice is hoarse, and he's coughed a few times," he said.
Yun Li bit her lip and squatted down to touch Director's ears. It was so cute and well-behaved that her heart softened. She decided to comfort it with a few words: "If you miss me, I can video call you."
She paused after saying this; after all, dogs didn’t have phones—only their owners did. Changing her approach, she added, "You can look at my pictures."
Jiang Shiyu chimed in from the side, "He’s seen those pictures for eight years; he’s tired of them."
Director tried to lick Yun Li's hand but restrained itself, instead nudging its nose against her palm. Instinctively, Yun Li pulled her hand back; she was afraid of dogs due to past experiences.
This action only made Director sadder. It whimpered a few times before lying down on the ground and began to cry. Tears glistened at the corners of its eyes, making it look pitiful.
Yun Li quickly apologized, "I'm sorry; I didn't mean to reject you." She gently patted its head again.
Jiang Shiyu coughed twice more, his fist pressed against his lips, looking somewhat unwell himself.
His voice was hoarse, looking as if he were gravely ill. "I have to go on a business trip soon. Could you help me take care of the Director?"
Yun Li had ignored him from the beginning, but this time she found herself in a dilemma. She had never raised a pet; she barely managed to take care of herself, so how could she possibly look after a dog? Especially one belonging to Jiang Shiyu.
She refused, "Find someone else!"
She stood up to leave, but the Director immediately got up and called out to her, trying to persuade her to stay.
Yun Li paused and turned to Jiang Shiyu. "You can ask Qin Nianzhe to help you; he's free."
The Director grew anxious and called out a few more times. Passersby were enchanted by the sight of the Samoyed.
"He's not in Jing City; he's gone abroad."
"What about Chi Zhi Yu?"
"He’s on a mission."
"If you’re too busy, that’s fine. I can board him at a pet shop, but they might not take good care of him. I've heard stories of pet shops mistreating dogs. I came to you because I have no one else to turn to."
"The Director misses you."
Yun Li sighed. "I don’t know how to take care of the Director."
"He’s very well-behaved; just feed him three meals a day and take him for a walk in the evening. He’s older now and can’t run for long, so don’t worry."
"When are you leaving for your trip?" she asked.
"Tomorrow."
Yun Li nodded. "Bring the Director over tonight; I’m going out to watch a movie now."
Jiang Shiyu smiled, his gaze softening as it rested on her. "Alright."
As she walked away, Jiang Shiyu bent down and patted the Director's head. "You did well; next time I'll get you a chicken leg."
The Director smiled with an angelic expression, enjoying his father's affection while also looking forward to spending time with his mother.
Yun Li and Shu Ran were watching a foreign action movie, but she found it hard to concentrate on the screen.
On one hand, she was thinking about how to plan her time to walk the dog; on the other hand, she felt a bit apprehensive because she was afraid of dogs and worried about potential accidents.
After watching the movie, the two of them sat in a café. Shu Ran noticed that Yun Li seemed distracted and asked, "What's wrong? Was the movie not good?"
