The director looked even more aggrieved, tears welling in the corners of his eyes.
Yun Li suddenly felt a wave of sadness wash over her; she bit her lip, unable to meet the director's gaze.
"What are you doing here?" he asked.
"Walking the dog," he replied.
Yun Li remained silent, clutching a bottle of soy sauce.
In the past couple of days, Yun Li had unexpectedly received flowers delivered to her door. Upon inquiry, she found out they were from Zhao Moran. He had prepared them after learning that she liked flowers.
Deng Ting expressed her delight, praising Zhao Moran for being romantic.
Yun Li wasn't in the mood to deal with the flowers, so Ms. Deng Ting took it upon herself to trim and arrange them, placing them prominently in the living room where Yun Li couldn't miss them. Just in case one day she felt inspired to talk about it.
Yun Zheng, on the other hand, seemed indifferent; whether his daughter dated or not was of no concern to him. He could support her even if she chose not to marry.
As soon as he said this, he received a sharp look from Deng Ting.
With New Year's Eve approaching, Shu Ran invited a few friends over to her house for a gathering. They all lived nearby, and after finishing dinner at home, they set off together.
The wind was strong outside, so Yun Li wrapped herself in a blue checkered scarf and took the subway for two stops until she arrived at Shu Ran's home, where Shu Ran's parents were also present.
The mahjong table and card table were already set up; they just needed the players to arrive.
Once everyone gathered, the house quickly filled up with laughter and chatter, creating a lively atmosphere.
Yun Li sat at the card table with Yu Meng, Xu Nian, and Peng Qingyu, organizing her cards as Yu Meng played a pair of threes.
Xu Nian had just played a pair. Yun Li, flustered, arranged her cards and revealed her own pair.
Peng Qingyu declined, and Yun Li bit her lip, playing a seven. Shu Ran was nearby, munching on sunflower seeds while observing the game.
The door opened, and Shu Ran's parents greeted them warmly. Cheng Zhou had arrived, urging everyone to come in as they were playing cards upstairs. Behind Cheng Zhou were Jiang Shiyu and Qin Nianzhe.
The three of them headed upstairs, and Qin Nianzhe chimed in, "Hey, brothers, we’re here!"
Upon seeing Cheng Zhou, Shu Ran immediately put on a sulky face. Yun Li turned to look back and was taken aback.
Xu Nian said, "Yun Li, it’s your turn."
Yun Li turned back, momentarily distracted. "What did you play?" she asked.
"A king," he replied.
Yun Li was speechless; she couldn't take it. Xu Nian grinned knowingly and added, "Four fours will crush you all."
Peng Qingyu raised an eyebrow at the single card left in Xu Nian's hand. "You’re just waiting here, huh?"
In a good mood, Xu Nian lifted his eyebrows. Yun Li struggled with her cards; she still had a bunch left but was about to end the game.
She sensed someone standing behind her—a palpable pressure accompanied by a familiar aura.
The game couldn’t continue like this. Yun Li couldn't take it; Peng Qingyu could.
He played four eights.
No one responded. Peng Qingyu continued.
Yu Meng said, "I pass."
Yun Li remained silent.
No one wanted it; everyone had little left in their hands, and this was the highest card. Yun Li glanced around, realizing that the situation was chaotic, as if there were no rules at all. The others weren't pressuring her; they understood she wasn't good at the game and were being a bit lenient.
A deep voice sounded from behind her, Shun Zi.
