She had slept longer than usual, and when she woke up, she felt a bit disoriented. Sitting on the bed, Yun Li was lost in thought for a while, the air conditioning quietly humming away.
Why was she having such fragmented dreams about the past? Yun Li rubbed her scalp with her hand, trying to pull herself back from that dream.
She got up and drew back the curtains; outside, a thick layer of fog enveloped everything, making the buildings appear hazy and indistinct. Stretching her body, she yawned and went to freshen up. When she returned, she was dressed in her usual loose dance attire, ready to practice at the barre in her spacious bedroom.
At first, she hadn’t planned to partition off a room for Wu Fang; it was just a separate space for Qin Nianchu to stay when she visited. After finishing her morning routine, she boiled some water and grabbed her phone to order takeout.
A message from Ms. Deng Ting popped up.
“Don’t forget about your blind date this afternoon! The guy is a police officer, not bad-looking and has a strong sense of justice. The best part is your dad really likes him; I hope you two hit it off!”
Yun Zheng always preferred high-achieving students and civil servants for her daughter.
Yun Li felt utterly helpless; every holiday, her mother started arranging blind dates for her. Once, she had three blind dates in one day, all of which were interrupted by a girl from the theater. After that, everyone knew she was desperate to get married and couldn’t wait any longer. They all began introducing their relatives and brothers to her, insisting that good fortune shouldn’t go to waste on outsiders.
She replied with a simple “Oh!”
After watching a few episodes of a drama at home, she slowly got ready. She put on light makeup; although reluctant, she knew basic courtesy was necessary. Once ready, Yun Li wrapped a scarf around her neck and stepped outside, glancing at the address on her phone—it was a chain hotpot restaurant.
She had learned that her blind date didn’t like spicy food, so she specifically chose this place. Outside, she deliberately lingered for ten more minutes before heading inside. A police officer would surely be dedicated and serious about punctuality; he wouldn’t appreciate someone who was late.
As she approached him based on his photo, she felt a bit embarrassed and said, “Sorry! There was traffic on the way.”
The man frowned slightly, his already fierce appearance now looking a bit displeased, but he still spoke patiently, "Miss Yun, it's four-thirty now. We agreed to meet at four to avoid the rush hour traffic. If you don't have the intention to be here, then let's not waste each other's time."
Yun Li not only felt unhappy but actually appreciated his words. "Mr. Gao, I think you're absolutely right. My only bad habit is that I tend to dawdle. Rest assured, I will try my best not to be late next time."
Officer Gao noticed that she was also forced into this situation, and his expression softened a bit. "Miss Yun, do you really dislike blind dates? Then we should be comrades on the same front."
Yun Li chuckled lightly, "So after we finish eating, we just say goodbye?"
Officer Gao nodded.
Yun Li had originally planned to order a spicy hot pot but changed her mind and opted for a yin-yang pot instead, each ordering a few dishes.
As they ate and chatted, it turned out that Ms. Deng Ting's introduction was quite reliable, making their conversation easy and relaxed.
"Gao Jie? Is that really you? A blind date?"
Gao Jie and Yun Li both looked up in surprise, and Yun Li froze.
Standing next to Gao Jie was Chi Zhi Yu, with Jiang Shiyu standing silently behind him.
Chi Zhi Yu's gaze quickly shifted away from Yun Li and Gao Jie, and suddenly, Yun Li felt that the delicious beef in her mouth had lost its flavor.
Gao Jie stood up. "This is Miss Yun Li; it's not exactly a blind date," he said.
Chi Zhi Yu's previously indifferent expression suddenly became meaningful.
He glanced back at the silent man behind him.
"Yun Li, long time no see," he said.
Gao Jie was taken aback. "You two know each other?"
Yun Li stood up and smiled faintly. "Yes, it's been a while."
Chi Zhi Yu seemed to do it on purpose, raising his voice slightly: "Yeah! It’s been seven years." He emphasized the word 'seven' heavily.
Jiang Shiyu's expression changed slightly as he looked at Chi Zhi Yu with deep eyes.
For some reason, Yun Li began to feel nervous, unsure whether to sit or stand.
