Since the last time she got drunk, Yun Li had not let herself fall apart again. She continued to work hard in class, living her life as if nothing had changed since Jiang Shiyu was no longer around. However, at night, she found it impossible to sleep. She would cry over not performing well enough and would break down over feeling inadequate and not excelling.
She didn’t understand what was happening to her; she had become impatient, eager for quick results. Unable to calm her mind, she tossed and turned in bed, anxious and sleepless. In her restlessness, she would get up to kick her legs, exhausting herself. The pain became unbearable, and she found herself sweating and crying alone in Wu Fang. In the past, no matter how much pain or hardship she endured, she would never cry. Yun Li felt that she was regressing.
She was stricter with herself than ever before. Yun Li hadn’t told Shu Ran or Yu Meng about her romantic situation, nor had she informed her parents. She wanted to wait until she had adjusted and become a better version of herself before revealing anything. This way, they wouldn’t see her sadness and wouldn’t worry about her.
However, Shu Ran eventually found out; Qin Nianchu couldn’t keep a secret and directly told Shu Ran out of frustration. On a weekend night at eleven o’clock, Yun Li was alone in Wu Fang when Shu Ran called her. Shu Ran scolded Jiang Shiyu for quite a while.
“Hao Hao, don’t worry. We’ll find someone even better; he won’t be any match for us.”
Yun Li forced a smile and replied, “Yeah, Ran Ran, I’m fine! I’ve just been busy these past few days with assignments I haven’t finished. I have to go now.”
Shu Ran sighed; she knew Yun Li was being evasive and didn’t want to show her wounds to anyone. Though gentle on the surface, there was a proud spirit within her that wouldn’t easily show weakness.
After hanging up the phone, Yun Li didn’t return to her dorm but instead went to a vending machine outside to buy a can of beer. After finishing the drink, her mood lifted considerably as she tossed the empty can into the trash bin and turned off the lights before leaving.
With winter break approaching, Yun Li had already packed her bags in advance. The snow had fallen in Beijing, and walking on the white roads reminded her of the times spent with Jiang Shiyu during heavy snowfall. Now everything felt different.
Yun Li’s flight was at five-thirty in the afternoon, so she arrived at the airport early to avoid traffic. On the way there, she received a call from Qin Nianzhe.
“Yun Li, can you do me a favor?”
“Sure, what’s up?”
“It’s about Brother Yu; he has a fever. I’ve never taken care of anyone before, and he keeps calling your name,” Qin Nianzhe said hesitantly.
Ever since he learned that Jiang Shiyu had his reasons for his actions, he hadn’t blamed him anymore. Although he didn’t know exactly what had happened, it was clear from Jiang Shiyu’s demeanor that he hadn’t moved on from it yet.
Jiang Shiyu had warned him not to seek out Yun Li, but now he could no longer stand by. Every day was a haze of drunkenness and despair, and he was fed up with cleaning up the mess left behind.
Yun Li remained silent, and Qin Nianzhe thought she had hung up. When he checked, she was still on the line!
"If you don’t want to talk, then forget it. Sorry for bothering you!"
As soon as he finished speaking, Yun Li asked, "Where are you?"
Qin Nianzhe was taken aback but quickly replied, "At his house."
Yun Li's heart softened despite herself. When Qin Nianzhe mentioned her name, her heart couldn't help but tremble.
Upon arriving at Xiangyuan No. 1, she instinctively went to scan her fingerprint. The thought that her fingerprint might have been deleted and that she wouldn't be able to get in made her feel even more distressed. She hesitated for a moment before pressing the doorbell.
Before long, Qin Nianzhe opened the door.
"Finally! You need to see this—he's burning up with a fever, thirty-nine degrees already, almost forty! He refuses to go to the hospital!"
Yun Li anxiously dropped her suitcase and rushed into the master bedroom.
Underneath the black blanket lay a familiar figure. Seeing that handsome face after such a long time made her heart ache suddenly. She approached Jiang Shiyu, whose face was flushed with fever, and placed her hand on his forehead—it was indeed burning hot.
Yun Li knew where the medicine cabinet was and grabbed some medication for Qin Nianzhe to prepare. Then she took ice cubes from the refrigerator, wrapped them in a cloth, and placed it on his forehead.
Next, she used a damp cloth with lukewarm water to wipe his neck and armpits repeatedly while Qin Nianzhe watched on with relief.
Jiang Shiyu felt terrible; he had no strength at all. Half-opening his eyes, he saw Yun Li busy tending to him, her thin face filled with seriousness.
Qin Nianzhe helped him take the medicine as time ticked by—the plane had already taken off without her.
She had missed it, but she didn’t regret it.
Seeing that Jiang Shiyu was stable, Qin Nianzhe stepped out of the room.
Yun Li stayed by his side as Jiang Shiyu slept fitfully, frowning as if he were having a nightmare.
Voices echoed in his mind—Shi Yi’s voice.
"You are not strong enough yet; you’ve seen your grandfather’s methods. This time it’s your father’s leg; next time it could be yours."
What was important and what wasn’t became clear to him.
"What do you want?"
Shi Yi’s expression remained calm as he spoke slowly: "I want you to be accepted into the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for aerospace engineering graduate studies. After graduation, join a company and give me ten years to develop aircraft for military use."
"This is your last chance—the only opportunity you have to break free from the Shi Family."
Jiang Shiyu scoffed, "You want to escape the Shi Family but insist on dragging me along."
A Yu replied, "Don't forget, you're also a member of the Shi Family. Without me, you wouldn't even have a chance to break free."
Shi Yi was the founder of Feitian Aviation Company twelve years ago. It was the only company not associated with the Shi Family, primarily engaged in manufacturing civilian aircraft and helicopters. To reach greater heights, she would need to produce military aircraft, which would give her the leverage to persuade the old man to hand over real power to her. Then she wouldn't have to be controlled anymore.
In her quest to escape the Shi Family, she was willing to use anyone, including her own son.
Jiang Shiyu furrowed his brow, unable to relax.
Yun Li reached out to smooth his furrowed brow and softly said, "I'm here. Just sleep."
Her voice pulled him from his nightmares. Suddenly, he grabbed Yun Li, who was sitting by the bed, and pulled her into his embrace with surprising strength. He was awake but pretended otherwise. Sweat from his body brushed against her cheek, and the strong beat of his heart echoed in her ears, making her heart race in response.
Just this once more, let him be reckless.
With his eyes tightly shut and lips pressed into a straight line, he wrapped his large hand around her back, enveloping her completely in his arms.
He didn't know how long they held each other; gradually, his grip loosened. Yun Li gently lifted her head to look at him. He still wore a frown but seemed to be murmuring something.
Yun Li leaned closer to listen; his voice grew slightly louder. "Bei Bei..."
Yun Li froze, her pale face instantly drained of color. In disbelief, she watched him before quickly rising and stepping back several paces. Her chest heaved violently as tears streamed down her face uncontrollably.
In a flustered state, she fled the room, stumbling several times as she leaned against the wall for support before dashing out.
Qin Nianzhe noticed her distress and hurriedly got up from the sofa to ask what was wrong. "Did something happen?"
Yun Li grabbed her suitcase and opened the door to leave.
Qin Nianzhe quickly followed her; Yun Li only cried without saying a word, gasping for breath through her tears.
