Aunt stepped aside as Jiang Shiyu approached, bending down with concern in her eyes. "Grandpa, what's wrong?"
Grandpa shook his head and smiled. "I'm just getting old; a little wind makes me sick. Don't worry about me."
The doctor said, "The old man is getting on in years, and his immunity is low. It's windy outside, so he should stay in. Once the sun comes out, he can go out for some fresh air."
"Alright, you all go rest! Let A Yu stay and chat with me," he added.
Jiang Han and Zhu Ling stood up. "Dad, you should rest. A Yu will take good care of you."
Jiang Shiyu nodded. Once everyone left, Jiang Zesheng straightened up in bed, and Jiang Shiyu helped him adjust his pillow.
The old man had little strength; just sitting up exhausted him.
"A Yu, weren't you studying at the base? Why are you here?"
"I finished early and thought I hadn't visited in a while, so I came to see you."
"Oh," the old man coughed lightly and continued, "It's nothing serious; just a minor illness. A bit of medicine will do the trick."
"How's your relationship with Little Girl?"
Jiang Shiyu's eyes dimmed slightly as his voice turned indifferent. "It's fine."
"That's good. It's not easy to find someone you like. You should treat her well, alright? Don't worry; your parents won't dare to do anything with me around."
"Okay, I understand, Grandpa. You should rest now!"
Once Grandpa fell asleep, Jiang Shiyu finally went out. The corridor lights were still on, glaringly bright, but he felt dull and lifeless.
He went to the fridge for a beer and headed upstairs, sitting on the balcony chair to drink.
The cold wind blew against him; he was only wearing a thin shirt. Facing the merciless chill, he didn't even blink as the fabric fluttered slightly in the breeze. The cold crept onto his skin, but he felt nothing—he was utterly alone and cold.
One can after another of beer disappeared as his lips turned slightly numb. He took out a cigarette and pulled out his phone to open Yun Li's WeChat.
He stared at it for a long time but didn’t type anything.
He looked at their chat history.
"I went to your house today to clean up a bit; I threw away some spoiled vegetables from the fridge."
"There are so many stray cats at our school now. One suddenly jumped out at me just now! I heard Nianchu say some classmates organized a donation drive to buy warm beds for the cats this winter. I donated a little; it’s too cold in Beijing winter; I hope they can survive."
"With all that fur, does the director not get cold? Haha."
I’m going to see the Dance Drama with Nianchu today. Look, I’ve already arrived! [Image attached]
It was so amazing! I cried from being so moved. The performance was incredible; the details were handled perfectly, and I couldn’t find a single flaw. I want to be that good in the future!
Today, I weighed myself and found that I’ve gained weight. I got scolded for it. [Image attached, crying.]
I miss you so much.
Looking at this message, Jiang Shiyu felt a sudden surge of warmth in his heart, as if cold water had been poured over a fire that now blazed fiercely again. His emotions swelled, becoming more intense and harder to control. He took a deep breath, exhaling all the muddiness within him.
His eyes were dark and deep, as if they were merging with the night itself. He extinguished the cigarette between his fingers, crushing it harshly in the ashtray until no sparks remained.
As he typed, the white light from the screen illuminated his sharply defined features; his high nose bridge and Peach Blossom Eyes glimmered with hidden brilliance against the darkness.
He typed out each word carefully: I miss you. Then he hit send.
