While still in the car, Yun Li's phone rang.
Seeing it was her father, Yun Zheng, she immediately became tense. She made a shushing gesture to Jiang Shiyu and nervously answered the call.
"Are you done with class?"
"Yes, I’m done, Dad."
"If you feel uncomfortable on the bus, just take a taxi. If you don’t have enough money, let me know, okay?"
"Got it, Dad. Don’t worry!"
The voice on the other end was clear in the quiet car as Jiang Shiyu kept her gaze straight ahead. After chatting for a bit, Yun Li began to pray for the call to end quickly.
Finally, when Yun Zheng ran out of things to say, he said, "Alright, be careful on the road. Go rest; I’m going to pick up your mom from work."
"Okay, bye."
After hanging up, she let out a sigh of relief; her palms were sweaty. Recently, every time Yun Zheng called, she felt this way—she still hadn’t gotten used to it.
"When do you plan to tell your parents?"
Yun Li shifted her gaze from her phone to him. "I don’t know; maybe after some time."
"Are you that scared? Is it because I’m not good enough or because you’re worried your parents won’t approve of me?" He teased her playfully.
"I’m worried my parents will get angry. In their eyes, I’m still a child; they might not accept it if I suddenly start dating."
"I should give them a heads-up! Let them have some time to adjust."
At home, after dinner, the two began packing their things. Their first stop was Liangzhou, which they heard was a very cool city. After that, they would head to Yun Cheng.
The night before, Yun Li had changed the water for the flowers; fresh flowers arrived almost every day. While she trimmed them, Jiang Shiyu patiently helped by removing excess leaves.
She bought several beautiful vases to switch around for display, and Jiang Shiyu would carefully clean them for her to use.
Early the next morning, they headed to the airport. After getting on the plane, Yun Li sent a photo to Shu Ran. The clouds outside the airplane window looked soft like thick cotton, making one want to lie down and sleep on them. The sky was as blue as clear ocean water, and sunlight streamed in as if it were a fairyland on earth.
"Where are you going?" Shu Ran asked, her curiosity piqued.
"Liangzhou," came the reply.
"Wow! Make sure to seize the opportunity on this trip; don’t let him slip away again," she added, a hint of mischief in her voice. Yun Li paused, biting her lip, knowing that Shu Ran was unaware of what had transpired between her and the other person in America. She certainly wouldn’t foolishly hand over any information to Shu Ran.
"Enough about that; we need to head to the hotel now," Yun Li said, as Jiang Shiyu finished loading their luggage into the trunk of the car.
Once they got into the vehicle, the driver was warm and friendly, engaging them in conversation throughout the ride.
"Are you here for vacation?" he asked.
"Yes," Jiang Shiyu replied. "We heard the scenery here is beautiful, so we wanted to take a look."
The driver chuckled. "It is indeed beautiful. But honestly, if you're just here to hike, you don't need to spend money on that. There are mountains everywhere; you can find one to climb for free."
Yun Li smiled at this. "Hiking is secondary; we mainly want to experience the local culture."
"The culture here is rich with diverse ethnic traditions; there's plenty to see," the driver continued, sharing insights about which areas were culturally vibrant and which spots offered pleasant yet lesser-known views.
He then transitioned into discussing local cuisine.
By the time they arrived at the hotel, Yun Li thought to herself, "Are all Liangzhou people this friendly?"
After resting for a bit in their room, they headed downstairs and decided to follow the driver’s recommendation to find a Beef Noodle Soup restaurant nearby.
