On Sunday night, Yun Li returned to school and scheduled a video call with Shu for ten o'clock. After washing her clothes and drying her hair, she opened her tablet to call Shu.
After ringing for several seconds, the call finally connected. On the screen appeared a smooth forehead and red hair, and Shu's voice came through, "What time is it? So early?"
It was around nine o'clock in the U.S. "It's nine. Don't go back to sleep," Yun Li replied.
Shu struggled to open her eyes and sit up. Her eyelids were puffy, and she had sleep in her eyes, while her hair was a messy nest. Yun Li couldn't help but laugh, "Look at you! What kind of sleep is that?"
Shu rubbed her eyes and yawned, "I stayed up late last night. By the way, how did your competition go?"
"It's already over," Shu said, yawning again.
She got out of bed, opened the curtains, and placed her phone aside before stretching. After washing up, she headed to the living room.
She and Zhou had an apartment in the U.S., prepared by her parents so that Zhou could live with her for her safety; they felt more at ease that way.
"Ha! What protection? It's clearly just surveillance," Shu thought to herself.
She took milk from the fridge and poured it into a transparent glass. After taking a sip, she sat down at the dining table where Zhou had prepared breakfast for her: sandwiches.
Next to it was a note that read, "There are buns in the pot."
Seeing this made Shu happy as she went to get a bun to eat. "Buns are still what I crave," she thought.
Noticing how content she looked while eating, Yun Li remarked, "Zhou is quite thoughtful!"
"That's his only redeeming quality; everything else is simply unforgivable," Shu huffed.
"Seriously though, Zhou treats you so well—he's meticulous, has good taste, comes from a good family, has great character, looks good, and has a solid education. Are you sure you don't want to consider him?"
As soon as Shu heard this, she nearly choked on the bun. Her face instantly turned red as she patted her chest and quickly took a sip of milk.
Finally swallowing her thoughts, Yun Li asked with concern, "Are you okay? Have you been possessed or something?"
"He has nothing to do with me anymore. He doesn't even like my type. He looks down on me, and I can't stand him either. There's no chance for us," she replied dismissively.
"Don't be like everyone else, just watching the drama unfold," Yun Li said.
"But it seems like he really likes you," her friend insisted.
"That's only because he’s been tasked by my parents to look after me. Otherwise, he wouldn't even bother to acknowledge me."
Shu was indifferent; she had never considered developing that kind of relationship with Zhou.
"Alright, enough about me. Why did you call?"
Yun Li rested her chin on her hands, elbows propped on the table. The dormitory was empty; it felt lonely talking to herself.
"Jiang Shiyu's birthday is coming up soon, and I'm wondering what to get him. Can you help me brainstorm?"
Shu chewed the last bite of her bun and thought for a moment before a mischievous smile crept onto her face. "Hey, that's easy! Just give him yourself as a gift."
"He would definitely like that!"
Yun Li's face flushed bright red. "Shu, can you be serious for once?"
After finishing her milk, Shu lay back on the sofa, tousling her hair in a messy bun, looking completely unkempt without any makeup. "I've never given a gift to a boyfriend before, and I don't even have one! Just pick something based on what he likes."
"But Jiang Shiyu has a lot of interests; he enjoys expensive things."
"I have money." Yun Li pulled out a bank card. "This is all my scholarship money; it should be enough for a gift."
"That’s good enough! But if you're going to give him something, make sure it's practical—something durable that he carries around often. It should remind him of you whenever he sees it."
Listening to Shu's advice sparked an idea in Yun Li's mind.
"I know what to get! You can go back to sleep now! Bye!"
With that, she hung up, leaving Shu holding an apple in her hand, still processing the conversation.
