"I don't want to go to England."
Old Master Shi slammed his hand on the table in anger. "You have to go! The Shi Family has such a vast estate, all of it is left for you, you little brat. Others would beg for this opportunity, and here you are, not knowing how fortunate you are."
The atmosphere at the dining table was tense. Jiang Shiyu remained unfazed, simply saying, "Grandpa, why not let my mom get a divorce and find someone new? In a couple of years, we can have another child, and then there will be a successor."
The Shi Family was very traditional; once married, divorce was not allowed, and infidelity during marriage was strictly prohibited. This was why Shi Yi had endured her husband's betrayal for so many years.
Hearing this, Old Master Shi was so furious that he almost threw the bowl in front of him but was stopped by Mrs. Shi.
"Don't be impulsive. Put it down."
Jiang Shiyu stood up. "I can't eat this meal." He added, "I won't linger around you anymore. You all enjoy your meal." After saying that, he left without caring about what happened behind him.
Shi Yi remained seated throughout, showing no reaction.
Once in the car, Jiang Shiyu instinctively reached for a cigarette, pulled one out, and lit it with his lighter. The smoke quickly filled the front seat of the car. He took out his phone and saw pictures of food from Yun.
The photos showed various dishes spread across a round table, not the rectangular one that represented hierarchy. Just looking at them made him imagine how harmonious the atmosphere must have been.
A pang of bitterness welled up inside him as he slowly replied: "Looks very appetizing."
Yun ate little and soon left the table. She sat in the living room and checked her phone to see Jiang Shiyu's reply.
"What about you? Have you eaten?"
"Yeah, I have."
Yun glanced at the chessboard on the table and took a picture to send to Jiang Shiyu. "Do you know how to play Go?"
"A little bit."
Yun's smile widened. "What a coincidence! I'm quite skilled at it. How about we play a couple of games next time?"
"Just go easy on me!"
Yun chuckled at his response, resting her chin on her hand as she looked at their chat history.
As Jiang Shiyu finished his cigarette, his throat burned from the smoke. He drove home slowly, and as he did, his phone rang. He glanced at the screen and saw it was his grandfather. He answered the call.
"A Yu, your grandfather didn't scold you, did he?"
Hearing his grandfather's voice lightened Jiang Shiyu's burden. "No, Grandpa saved me some food, but I wasn't full."
"Good. I didn't eat much either. Come over for some chicken soup. I learned the recipe online, and it turned out pretty well. If I hadn't stopped him, Xiao Xia Mi would have drunk it all."
Jiang Shiyu smiled. "Sure."
The Shi family had many rules, and Old Master Shi was quite rigid, placing great importance on interests and always believing that his choices were the right ones. His decision to marry Shi Yi to Jiang Hao was based on the power of the Jiang family in Jiangzhou.
Back then, Jiang Zesheng also believed that a marriage alliance would benefit a corporation. He insisted that Jiang Hao marry Shi Yi, thinking that feelings could be cultivated after marriage. However, Shi Yi had been raised to be just as inflexible as Old Master Shi, often saying things that Jiang Hao found hard to accept.
Their relationship was strained; they frequently argued. After Jiang Shiyu was born, Jiang Hao felt his duty was done and began seeing other women. Since Jiang Shiyu could remember, countless women had come to their home.
His mother showed no concern and even gave money to send some of them away. Whenever Shi Yi looked at Jiang Shiyu's face, she would be reminded of Jiang Hao's indiscretions, which often led her to leave him alone at home.
Once Jiang Zesheng learned of this situation, he took Jiang Shiyu under his wing. Yet the shadows of the past lingered; he could never forget those memories.
He just wanted to do what he loved, but both his maternal grandparents pressured him, treating him as a mere tool for the family's sacrifices.
Jiang Zesheng regretted his past actions and decided not to interfere with Jiang Shiyu's choices anymore. He didn't want the misfortunes of the previous generation to befall the next; he saw things clearly, but Old Master Shi remained stubbornly set in his ways.
