Jiang Shiyu smirked slightly, thinking, how hard could it be to eat a piece of fish? He picked up his chopsticks and took a piece, placing it in his mouth.
Yun Li, sitting nearby, felt a bit anxious for him, while Shu Ran watched with excitement and a hint of schadenfreude. After just a couple of chews, Jiang Shiyu's relaxed demeanor shifted dramatically; his face contorted in disgust as he frowned and reached for a napkin to spit it out.
Shu Ran leaned back in her chair, laughing heartily. After he finished spitting out the fish, Yun Li handed him a cup of water, which he drank to wash away the lingering taste that was both fishy and sour.
"Are you sure this fish isn't spoiled?" Jiang Shiyu questioned, pushing his chopsticks away as if they were contaminated.
Shu Ran suppressed her laughter and replied, "It's a local specialty. Although I don't quite understand it myself, it's widely acknowledged as being unappetizing."
Seeing her so amused, Cheng Zhou offered her some food from his plate. "Alright, enough playing around. Let's eat! The dishes will get cold."
The other dishes were decent; the Dongpo Pork had a hint of sweetness, and the sauce was perfect for mixing with rice. Jiang Shiyu served Yun Li a bowl of San Xian Soup, which was delicious, prompting her to indulge in another bowl.
By the time they finished eating, it was around seven o'clock. They strolled around for a bit; with the cold weather, only the snack street was bustling with activity.
Shu Ran bought one snack after another and enjoyed them thoroughly. Yun Li wanted to join in but reminded herself that she couldn't eat any more; if she did, she'd face punishment when she returned to school.
Seeing her gaze longingly fixed on Shu Ran's food made Jiang Shiyu feel quite sorry for her. He ordered a portion of Iron Plate Squid and asked the vendor to add extra spice since their meals had been rather bland today. She had already eaten more San Xian Soup than usual and barely touched the Dongpo Pork.
The local cuisine wasn't particularly spicy, so even the added chili didn't pack much heat; it was just enough to satisfy a craving.
Sitting at one of the communal tables in the snack street, Yun Li inhaled the delicious aromas wafting around her and felt her stomach rumble again. Suddenly, a red paper cone appeared before her, filled with several bamboo skewers steaming with heat.
Jiang Shiyu sat beside her and encouraged, "Go ahead! Squid won't make you gain weight."
Yun Li swallowed hard as she stared at the skewers with longing; her desire to eat was bubbling over—she just needed an opening to indulge without restraint.
Shu Ran, munching on Grilled Gluten, chimed in to persuade her as well. "Exactly! Just eat! It’s fine."
"If we gain weight, we can just exercise more; we'll slim down quickly."
Convinced by their words, Yun Li's lips curled into a smile of innocence as she pulled out a skewer. The small squid tentacles looked like they contained no calories at all.
Putting it in her mouth, the crispy and tender texture was infused with the fragrant spiciness of the chili sauce. Yun Li, perhaps having not tasted these snacks in a long time, brightened up noticeably after taking a bite. Watching her eat like a little kitten—obedient and adorable—Jiang Shiyu raised an eyebrow, a hint of indulgence hidden in her gaze.
After strolling through the snack street, they returned to the hotel, as they needed to wake up early for their adventures the next day. Yun Li felt nervous all the way back, unable to meet Jiang Shiyu's eyes.
Shu Ran stifled a laugh and secretly slipped a small box into Yun Li's down jacket pocket. When the elevator reached the seventeenth floor, Shu Ran waved goodbye to Yun Li, urging her to rest early.
Yun Li stepped forward, looking flustered as she said, "Ran Ran, why don't I sleep with you tonight?"
Shu Ran immediately took a big step out of the elevator, wearing an understanding expression. "I'm already a big kid; I don't need you to keep me company!" She quickly pressed the button to close the doors and turned to pull Cheng Zhou along with her. Yun Li watched her determined figure leave, biting her lower lip.
"Stupid Ran Ran."
Inside the elevator, Jiang Shiyu's gaze fell lightly on her. With one hand in her pocket and a lazy posture, she leaned forward slightly and whispered, "Are you afraid of me?"
Yun Li was startled, her shoulders instinctively shrinking as her breath caught. She lowered her eyes, unable to speak, shaking her head like a little girl who had been teased by him.
Jiang Shiyu smiled gently with her deep Peach Blossom Eyes. As the elevator doors opened, she took hold of Yun Li's wrist and led her out.
