"What is this? It looks like bait!"
Yu Suihuan thought it was strange; she had never seen anyone set a simple leaf like this before. Could it really catch wild chickens?
Huo Yaojun smiled at her but said nothing, his long fingers making a shushing gesture between his lips. He placed several leaves on the ground and led Yu Suihuan to a hidden corner to hide.
"There are often wild chickens here; I've encountered them a few times while working," he whispered in a low voice near her ear, his breath tickling her.
"Oh!"
Yu Suihuan was skeptical but knew that wild chickens were indeed common in this area. In this era, the resources of the mountains were still abundant, as they had not yet been over-exploited.
Suddenly, two wild chickens appeared in her line of sight, gradually approaching the spot where Huo Yaojun had placed the leaves. Yu Suihuan held her breath, afraid to startle them.
The two wild chickens circled around the leaves a few times before lowering their heads to peck at the meat hidden within.
"Go!"
The man whispered behind her and tugged at Yu Suihuan's wrist to pull her along.
Yu Suihuan wanted to say that it wouldn't be easy to catch those wild chickens and that they mustn't scare them away.
"See?"
The man looked at her with a gentle smile on his face.
"Huh?"
She watched as the two wild chickens clung to the meat in the leaves, their heads completely covered by the leaves, turning in circles. The man bent down and caught one with each hand.
"Wow, that's impressive! What’s the principle behind this?"
Yu Suihuan had never seen such a method of catching chickens before and was thoroughly amazed.
"Don't let a single leaf block your view! Let's go!"
"Wow, that's impressive! Really impressive!"
Huo Yaojun strode ahead, occasionally glancing back to check on her progress.
Yu Suihuan followed closely behind, not lagging at all. She had just learned a new skill and was feeling quite happy about it.
Upon reaching their meeting spot, they found a large pile of firewood on the ground, but not a single animal in sight.
"Wow, Huo Yaojun is amazing! Two at once?"
Seeing that there was food to be had, everyone happily gathered around.
"Yaojun, you’re incredible!"
A few Male Educated Youths sighed in admiration and came over to take a look.
"Yu Suihuan is our little lucky star; I’m just riding on her coattails!"
Huo Yaojun handed the wild chickens he had caught to another Male Educated Youth and continued speaking.
"You girls can play over there; we’ll take care of the chickens."
"What’s there to be afraid of when it comes to handling chickens? I’m not scared at all; we’ll just watch!"
Liu Yingyu was rather carefree; she wasn’t afraid of killing chickens and had seen her family do it during festivals before.
Huo Yaojun shot her a glance; she wasn’t too foolish after all.
"Yu Suihuan, let’s go check out the flowers over there! It’s better than watching them kill chickens; someone might get upset!"
It turned out her brother was worried that Yu Suihuan would be scared of the chickens being killed, and her tone was tinged with jealousy.
Yu Suihuan didn’t think much of it, but she really didn’t want to watch.
Huo Yaojun watched as Yu Suihuan was surrounded by a group of Female Educated Youths chattering excitedly while picking flowers, and he couldn’t help but smile.
"Hey, Brother Jun, looking good! Yu Zhiqing is the prettiest girl in our Youth Commune!"
A nearby Male Educated Youth noticed that Huo Yaojun's gaze towards Yu Suihuan was different and teased him intentionally.
"Hey, you little rascal, don’t say nonsense!"
I see, I see. Can you all tell that Brother Jun likes Yu Zhiqing?
Yes!
