Qi Qin cherished this Silver Bracelet during her lifetime, as it was said to be the only keepsake left to her by her grandmother. Unexpectedly, Qi Qin was killed by this scoundrel, and even her beloved bracelet was snatched away, carelessly tossed into a cedar chest meant for her dowry.
The chest was locked, and Wang Heng couldn't open it; he wasn't even allowed inside the house, let alone approach the chest. If anyone discovered he had entered, he and his brother would surely face a beating. Their father, in collusion with his new wife and her son, would join in the punishment.
They worked all day without food, sometimes so hungry they could hardly stand up straight. There was no way they could match strength with their tormentors, so they had to endure in silence.
Eventually, that Woman's Son became even more ruthless, taking pleasure in humiliating Wang Heng and his brother. He forced them to kneel and made them eat pig slop and even pig feces. How could they bear this? Finally, one day, Wang Heng seized an opportunity and knocked the Woman's Son unconscious with a wooden stick. It was then that he managed to escape with his brother, wandering aimlessly and barely surviving.
During spring, summer, and autumn, they managed to scrape by; at least there was food in the mountains to keep them from starving. But what about winter? With temperatures dropping below thirty degrees Celsius, what would they do? He knew all too well that if it weren't for the Godfather and Godmother they encountered, they probably wouldn't survive the winter.
Bringing his thoughts back to the present, Wang Heng gritted his teeth and clenched his fists as he stepped into the main room.
"Who are you?"
The woman was lying on the bed after having eaten her fill. Seeing a stranger enter, she rolled off the bed in surprise. Wang Heng ignored her; he had more pressing matters at hand and didn't want to waste time with this Old Woman.
"Hey! Who do you think you are? This is my house! What do you want?"
The woman jumped down from the bed and grabbed Wang Heng's arm.
"Let go! I'm here to get my mother's things!"
Wang Heng had eaten well recently and regained some strength; with a swift motion of his arm, he broke free from her grip.
"What?"
The woman stared blankly at Wang Heng's face for a long time, as if searching her memory for something. It wasn't until Wang Heng's hand brushed against the corner of the cedar chest that recognition dawned on her.
"You! It's you! How dare you come back? Tie Zhu! Come here! Dang Jia! This little beast has returned—don't let him get away!"
The woman finally reacted and began to scream like a slaughtered pig.
In the next room, Ke Tie Zhu was still deep in sleep when he was suddenly jolted awake by her cries. Listening closely, he realized that it was that little brat, Gou Sheng, who had returned. He immediately grabbed a shovel and rushed into the room.
That little rascal had knocked him out last time, and even now, he still had a headache whenever it rained. Since he was back, there was no way he would let him leave alive today.
"You little brat, how dare you come back! I’ll kill you!"
Ke Tie Zhu raised the shovel and swung it down mercilessly at Wang Heng.
Wang Heng was startled and quickly dodged to avoid the blow. Just as he was about to escape through the door, he found himself blocked by Zhang Dahua's sturdy frame.
"You little bastard, still trying to run? Zhuzi, get him!"
Seeing this, Ke Tie Zhu lifted the shovel again and swung it down hard, but Wang Heng managed to dodge once more. The shovel struck the ground with a heavy thud, sending sparks flying.
Wang Heng flipped onto the bed, trying to break through the window to escape. However, before he could make it, someone grabbed his leg from behind, causing him to fall flat on his face.
His teeth cut into his tongue and lips, filling his mouth with a metallic taste of blood.
"You little bastard, today I must kill you!"
Ke Tie Zhu was a few years older than Wang Heng and much taller; he looked strong from all the food he had eaten. In comparison, Wang Heng seemed like a weak chick.
The man dragged Wang Heng by his leg and pulled him down to the ground, slamming his head against the edge of the bed with a loud thud.
"Zhuzi, take him to the pigpen! Don’t dirty up my floor!"
Zhang Dahua pointed at Wang Heng's blood, worried it would stain her clean floor.
Just as she finished speaking, she suddenly felt someone grab her hair from behind with great force.
A tremendous pull yanked her hair back painfully, nearly tearing her scalp off as she cursed loudly in response.
"Who the hell dares to grab my hair?"
The more she cursed, the harder the man pulled. The more vulgar her insults became, the tighter his grip grew.
"Let him go!"
The man spoke softly as his gaze met Ke Tie Zhu's, who was still holding onto Wang Heng's hind leg.
Mother!
Did you hear that? I told you to let him go!
The man, who had been expressionless, suddenly shouted, startling both Ke Tie Zhu and Zhang Dahua, causing them to shiver.
