Yu Songyu glanced over and casually remarked, "Alright then, next time I'll have my man join too!" After she finished speaking, she swayed her hips as she walked away, eliciting a burst of laughter from the crowd.
Today was the day to pay the rent, and Yu Songyu planned to curry favor with the Landlady to see if she had any connections that could help her open a store under the guise of a public business. She had inquired about it and learned that while individual businesses were currently not permitted, some people with connections had managed to open shops and sell goods under public names.
If this route didn’t work out, she would have to think of other ways to make money. After all, one must not let opportunities slip away; there are always more solutions than difficulties.
With the money distributed, Yu Songyu and a few others entered the house. The grandmother brought out some roasted chestnuts for them to enjoy. These chestnuts were gathered last autumn from the mountains, large and plump. With each bite, they were soft, sticky, and sweet—Yu Songyu had never tasted such delicious chestnuts before.
"These chestnuts are amazing!" Yu Songyu exclaimed as she devoured several of them.
"Isn't this just ordinary chestnuts? Your reaction is over the top, like you've eaten some exquisite delicacy!" Wang Jianjun scoffed after trying one. To him, they tasted just like any other chestnut he had eaten before; nothing special about them.
Little did he know that as a modern person, Yu Songyu had been exposed to too many processed foods laden with additives. To her, this natural flavor without any additives was incredibly precious. Moreover, these chestnuts were different from what she had tasted before; they not only had a sweet aftertaste but also carried a refreshing aroma.
Seeing Yu Songyu enjoying herself, Yang Qinghe took it upon himself to be her servant. He peeled one for her, and she eagerly ate it. Eventually, he directly placed peeled chestnuts into her mouth without a care for anyone else around, showcasing their affection openly.
"Hey, Wang Jianjun! I want some too!" Xu Zhuzhen shouted loudly, her voice ringing out like a female version of a thunderclap.
"Just eat if you want to. Why are you telling me?" Wang Jianjun rolled his eyes and pushed the basket of chestnuts toward Xu Zhuzhen.
Seeing this, Xu Zhuzhen's face fell; she wished Wang Jianjun would treat her like Yang Qinghe treated Yu Songyu.
"I feel uneasy without a yard; should we get a couple of dogs?" Xiao Yu suggested.
"That sounds good. I was thinking of starting with a puppy so we can build a bond," came the reply.
As soon as the word "puppy" was mentioned, Yu Songyu suddenly recalled how often it was used to describe men. She looked Yang Qinghe up and down; he had sharp eyebrows and bright eyes, with striking features that gave him an aggressive appearance. He seemed to fit the wolf-dog type, didn’t he?
"What are you thinking about?" Yang Qinghe asked, noticing her intense gaze.
"Huh? Oh, nothing much. I was just wondering where to find a puppy!" Yu Songyu quickly snapped back to reality, feigning calmness.
"You don’t need to worry about that; I’ll ask around when I have the chance!" Zhao Lianzhi chimed in, though a pang of bitterness tugged at her heart. Some people struggled to find enough food to feed themselves, let alone raise a child—like her. Yet others could casually afford to feed animals.
Life was unfair; some thrived while others barely survived.
