Since Fu Xingchen and the others arrived at Anning Valley, life flowed like a gentle stream, filled with tranquility and harmony. Every morning, the villagers rose early to prepare for a new day of work.
Fu Xingchen and several young men carried hoes as they walked toward the fields. Along the way, Young Man Xiao Li excitedly said, “Young Master Fu, the soil here is fertile; whatever we plant grows well. It’s much easier than farming before.” Fu Xingchen nodded with a smile, “That may be true, but we still need to put in the effort. Farmers rely on the land for their livelihood; we can’t be careless.”
Upon reaching the fields, everyone had clear roles—turning the soil, sowing seeds, and watering—each movement was skilled and fluid. While working, Fu Xingchen shared farming tips with the young men: “Turn the soil deeper so the seeds can take root firmly. Water slowly; if you rush it, the crops won’t drink enough.”
Meanwhile, Mu Yunfan and Su Yizhi were learning hunting skills from an elder. The elder led them to the edge of the forest and pointed at some footprints on the ground. “Look here; these are rabbit tracks. The front paw prints are small, while the back ones are larger. Follow these tracks, and you’ll likely find a rabbit nest.” Mu Yunfan and Su Yizhi observed closely, committing it to memory. Suddenly, Su Yizhi noticed some movement in the grass nearby. “There’s something over there!” The elder gestured for them to be quiet and approached carefully. With a swift motion of his rope, he caught a rabbit. “Hunting requires quick eyes and hands, but also patience; you mustn’t scare off your prey,” he said with a smile. Mu Yunfan and Su Yizhi were greatly impressed and eagerly sought advice, quickly grasping some essential hunting techniques.
In the village, women gathered in front of thatched huts; some spun yarn while others prepared meals. One Sister unfolded a piece of cloth she had woven and said to another, “The cloth we make here is straightforward without all those complicated processes from outside, yet it’s sturdy and beautiful.” Another Sister nodded in agreement, “Yes, life here is comfortable, and it feels secure.” Meanwhile, Children played joyfully in the village—chasing butterflies one moment and catching fish by the stream the next—carefree and happy.
As evening approached, those who had worked all day returned to the village one after another. Smoke curled up from chimneys as delicious aromas filled the air. Everyone gathered around a bonfire to share their day’s harvest. A cheerful uncle exclaimed, “Today I worked several acres with Young Master Fu; judging by how things are growing, this year will surely be a bountiful one!” Mu Yunfan added, “We also learned quite a bit about hunting today; we’ll be able to provide more meat for everyone.”
The atmosphere was lively as people exchanged words enthusiastically. At that moment, a young man suddenly asked, “Young Master Fu, Mu Gongzi, will we stay here in this valley forever and ignore everything outside?” Fu Xingchen looked around at everyone: “Right now outside there is chaos and suffering among the common people. Here in Anning Valley, while we can’t change the situation in the world, we can protect this piece of pure land and ensure everyone lives peacefully. As long as everyone is willing, I Fu Xingchen am happy to spend my remaining years here.” Both Mu Yunfan and Su Yizhi nodded in agreement.
The elder smiled and said, “Though this valley is small, it can accommodate us all. In our future days together, let’s work hand in hand to make Anning Valley even better.” Everyone echoed his sentiments with enthusiasm in their eyes as they looked forward to what lay ahead.
Days passed one after another, and Anning Valley became increasingly vibrant. The crops thrived under the sun's nurturing rays; fields were lush green while houses were newly repaired and arranged harmoniously. The smiles on people's faces grew brighter as they radiated happiness. They felt they had found their true home—free from war's turmoil and tax oppression—living simple lives dictated by sunrise and sunset. They cherished this land with care while safeguarding their hard-won peace and happiness.
