A long while passed, and Pei Guanjing still had not accepted Ye Chen's tea offering.
In a corner where Pei Guanjing could not see, Ye Chen's eyes darted around quickly. Suddenly, he looked up and met Pei Guanjing's scrutinizing gaze.
"Master, did Disciple do something wrong? This cup of tea..." Ye Chen glanced at the untouched tea in Pei Guanjing's hand and smiled awkwardly. "It's gone cold; should I get you another cup?"
"No need, this is just fine." Pei Guanjing extended his hand, his fingers as cold as ice briefly touching the back of Ye Chen's hand before gently taking the cup from him. He tilted his head back and drank it all in one go, then steadied Ye Chen as he helped him to his feet.
"You haven't done anything wrong; just remember to be cautious with your words and actions when you're out in the world."
Ye Chen, supported by Pei Guanjing, felt a mix of surprise and gratitude. A hint of confusion flickered in his clear, deer-like eyes. How had Pei Guanjing become so easy to talk to? It was truly hard to fathom.
Ye Chen lived in Pei Guanjing's tent, on a small bed separated by wooden boards on the other side.
Compared to sleeping on a hard bed with only a thin blanket before, this place felt like paradise. The small bed was soft and comfortable, with thick bedding—this was the best sleep he had since escaping from home.
In addition, Pei Guanjing's tent contained a large bathing tub next to an iron stove for heating water for baths. Occasionally, they could even cook a little extra food to improve their meals.
However, although there was a river nearby for water supply, the process of fetching water was frequent and laborious. Therefore, Ye Chen could only bathe in the tub after Pei Guanjing had used it, which also helped conserve resources.
Noticing Ye Chen's eager gaze toward the bathing tub, Pei Guanjing averted his eyes and said lightly, "The Medical Camp still has some medicine that needs packing. I have to go take care of it now; remember to clean up when I return."
"Understood, Master." Ye Chen replied cheerfully, the title rolling off his tongue as if he had already grown accustomed to this new identity.
After confirming that Pei Guanjing had truly left, Ye Chen eagerly unfastened his clothes and carefully sat down in the bath barrel, ready to enjoy a long-awaited soak.
During this time, Ye Chen had been living in a communal dormitory, where he could only heat some water for a quick wash. Now, he finally had the chance to take a proper bath.
The barrel was filled with an indescribable scent of pine resin, thick and lingering, refusing to dissipate. It seemed the barrel was made of pine wood, which explained the strong aroma. Ye Chen didn’t think much of it; after finishing his bath, he drained the dirty water and tidied up his camp. It wasn’t long before Pei Guanjing returned.
The Medical Camp didn’t have fixed rest times, but when there was no battle with the Wolf Tribe, there weren’t many injured soldiers arriving. Most visitors were those with old injuries coming to collect ointments or medicinal wine. In these relatively quiet days, Ye Chen began to adapt to life as an apprentice beside Pei Guanjing.
However, today brought a familiar yet strange face.
“Hey, Ye Chen! You still haven’t returned my personal guard token! You just run off to the Medical Camp to be an apprentice without even saying hi? Do you even consider me a brother?”
The voice boomed like thunder from a distance. Ye Chen, who was focused on grinding medicine, along with the injured soldiers lying nearby and Pei Guanjing busy in the tent, all clearly heard Lou Yu’s angry shout.
A sturdy yet slightly lean young man suddenly flung aside the heavy tent flap and strode confidently toward Ye Chen, looking down at him from above. Lou Yu raised an eyebrow, suppressing his anger as he questioned, “You’ve been back for so long and didn’t even greet me? You come to the Medical Camp to assist someone else—does being with him seem better than being with me?”
“Uh…” Ye Chen opened his mouth to say something but hesitated. He instinctively glanced back; Pei Guanjing was calmly checking a soldier’s pulse, looking like a solitary white lotus in a tranquil pond.
Seeing this, Lou Yu quickly turned Ye Chen’s head back toward him and said urgently, “With me here, speak boldly! Did he force you? Why else would you come to the Medical Camp?”
Ye Chen forcefully swatted Lou Yu’s hand away but couldn’t break free. With a helpless expression, he explained, “It was my master who took me as an apprentice and sent me here to work; they need people here, so it’s not bad for me to come.”
“That’s not what I’m asking,” Lou Yu pressed on, locking eyes with Ye Chen. His gaze was sharp enough to seem like it could pierce through to his thoughts, afraid of missing even the slightest change in his expression. “I’m asking if you came to the Medical Camp willingly?”
"I... I naturally came here willingly!" Ye Chen avoided his intense gaze, feeling a bit guilty as he carefully poured the ground medicinal powder into the bottle. "You don't need to worry about me; Master treats me very well."
"Master?" Lou Yu released his grip, standing up straight. His eyes, sharp as knives, turned toward Pei Guanjing, but he spoke to Ye Chen instead. "Why did you choose Pei Guanjing as your master? What can he teach you?"
"To heal and save people!"
Ye Chen sensed the atmosphere growing increasingly tense, and it seemed that the pressure from Pei Guanjing's side was also gradually lowering. His heart raced, and he quickly reached out to grab Lou Yu's arm, pulling him forcefully out of the Medical Camp and dragging him to the small corner where they had previously spied on Pei Guanjing.
