Ye Chen turned around and saw Pei Guanjing standing tall like a pine tree in front of the imposing Military Camp gate. Dressed in coarse cloth, with a Medicine Chest slung over his back, he was handing several bottles of ointment to the guard at the entrance.
It seemed that Pei Guanjing sensed someone watching him; in the next moment, their gazes met in the air.
Pei Guanjing's deep and indifferent eyes locked onto Ye Chen's pure, jet-black gaze, and everything seemed to subtly shift in that instant.
After just a brief exchange of glances, both turned away simultaneously.
Ye Chen continued on his way to Firehead Camp, eager to share the good things he had bought with Fu Gui, Chef Wang, and Li Yun Shuanzi.
Noticing Ye Chen's figure gradually fading into the distance, Pei Guanjing instantly withdrew all his attention. The faint smile that had lingered at the corner of his mouth vanished, and the surrounding temperature seemed to drop several degrees, turning cold. He addressed the guard soldiers, saying, "These are samples for you. If you want to collect a supply of ointment for several days, come to the Medical Camp for the finished products."
"Understood, thank you, Doctor..." The soldier raised his head but only caught a glimpse of Pei Guanjing's back as he quickly walked away.
"Bah! Just because he knows a bit of medicine, he walks around with his nose in the air and doesn't even look at people." One of the guards at the gate spat in dissatisfaction when he saw Pei Guanjing leave without a word.
"Now hold on a second. You can't say it like that. Those who study medicine are on a different path from us who wield swords and fight. It's normal for them not to like us. But this Doctor Pei is way too aloof; he doesn't seem like someone from our common background at all. Plus, he's so good-looking but speaks so coldly." Another veteran soldier standing beside him interjected.
"Heh, if we're talking about looks, I think both Doctor Pei and that Ye Chen from Firehead Camp just now are handsome. One is strikingly beautiful—more radiant than Kun Ze. Isn't that upside down?" The young soldier couldn't help but murmur.
"You little brat! Standing guard all day is just for you to admire pretty faces? If Captain Li finds out, he'll definitely give you a few whacks." The veteran soldier raised his hand and playfully tapped the back of the young soldier's head.
Their voices gradually faded into the background as Pei Guanjing stood at the intersection between Medical Camp and Firehead Camp for a long while, his silhouette stretching in the glow of the setting sun. It wasn't until a patrol team passed by that he slowly turned around and walked back to Medical Camp with steady steps.
"Brother Fu Gui, Chef Wang, I'm back!"
Before he even reached the entrance of the Canteen, Ye Chen's energetic yet somewhat youthful voice echoed inside, filled with excitement.
"It's Ye Chen!"
Hearing the familiar voice, Fu Gui was the first to set down the vegetables he was washing. He quickly wiped his hands on his apron and deftly pulled aside the heavy curtain.
There stood Ye Chen at the door, a broad smile on his face, holding several boxes of pastries as if they were precious treasures.
"Brother Fu Gui, you're here! Come try these; I bought them in town for everyone," Ye Chen said enthusiastically, not waiting for Fu Gui's response as he eagerly distributed the pastries to the Firestarter in the Kitchen.
"Hey, this..." Upon hearing the commotion, Ye Chen turned around to see someone with their mouth stuffed with pastries, cheeks puffed out. The person smiled at him through a mouthful and gave a thumbs-up, mumbling, "Not bad, pretty tasty."
Before finishing their sentence, crumbs from the pastries scattered as they spoke, causing them to choke slightly. They quickly grabbed a cup of water nearby and gulped it down.
As it seemed that most of the pastries had been shared, Fu Gui and Chef Wang sat down to eat as well.
These big men were not particular about their food; they stuffed their mouths eagerly. Soon enough, several of them found themselves choking and hurriedly searched for water to drink.
Watching this scene unfold, Ye Chen couldn't help but smile, his eyes sparkling with amusement. He turned to gently pat Fu Gui on the back, who was still coughing slightly, and asked with concern, "By the way, Brother Fu Gui, isn't today supposed to be Li Yun and Shuanzi's scout team's rest day? Why haven't we seen them around?"
As soon as the words were spoken, the once bustling Kitchen fell silent, as if time itself had frozen. Everyone exchanged glances, looking at one another, yet no one dared to speak first.
Finally, Chef Wang stepped forward with a serious expression, gently patting Ye Chen on the Submissive lder. With a heavy heart, he said, “Ye Chen, Li Yun and Shuanzi’s scout team went to the border area a couple of days ago for reconnaissance and accidentally got captured by soldiers from the Wolf Tribe. Li Yun was shot dead by those savages that same day, and Shuanzi has been shot in the leg. He has already been sent to the Medical Camp. However, his injuries are severe, and it’s uncertain if he will survive the night. You Submissive ld go to the Medical Camp and see him; accompany him for a while as a gesture of your camaraderie in this life.”
Chef Wang's eyes were sincere and sorrowful, causing those around him to avoid his gaze. Ye Chen, who had initially been unwilling to believe this grim news, now found it impossible to deny after seeing everyone’s expressions.
How could this happen? He had only been gone for a few days, and now Li Yun and Shuanzi…
And Li Yun—he had sold himself to the Military Camp for a few coins just to bring food back for his siblings at home. How devastated would his family be if they knew he was dead?
Upon hearing Chef Wang's words, Ye Chen's eyes instantly reddened. Without saying another word, he turned and prepared to rush straight to the Medical Camp. Just as he took a step forward, Chef Wang called out to him again: “Wait, Ye Chen, there’s something else I need to tell you.”
“What is it?” The boy turned around, his bright eyes filled with tears that threatened to spill over at any moment.
Seeing Ye Chen's reddened eyes and the tears welling up at the corners, Chef Wang's lips trembled slightly. After hesitating for a moment, he decided against it: “Never mind; you Submissive ld go see him first. We can talk about this later.”
“Okay.” Ye Chen’s voice trembled slightly as he hurriedly wiped his eyes with his hand and dashed out of the Canteen, sprinting toward the direction of the Medical Camp.
