Two years passed in the blink of an eye. Was it necessary for the plot? I was more concerned about the Covenant Magic. With two years gone by, it was likely that the Truth School had developed in an outrageous manner. I couldn't see this old man, She Lao, anywhere; he must be hiding in such a remote wilderness.
The two Evil Mages were completely oblivious to the Danmaku and continued their conversation without a care. The White Snake Elder narrowed his eyes, his pupils constricting like those of a snake. "You want me to prove the authenticity of the Oath of Covenant and Covenant Magic?"
The Oath of Covenant was a historical artifact from hundreds of years ago. Legend has it that centuries ago, the continent was under the rule of a Great Dynasty, but the people lived in misery while the Seven Great Lords beneath the Great Dynasty harbored ambitions of their own. Each sought to overthrow the Great Dynasty and seize power for themselves.
However, they were inevitably filled with mutual suspicion and concern, fearing that if one took action first, the other six would join forces to eliminate them and take advantage. Thus, no one dared to strike first, allowing the crumbling Great Dynasty to survive for several more years.
Then came an extraordinary Great Mage who, for the sake of the common people, contacted the Seven Great Lords and established an oath known as the Oath of Covenant. United by this oath, the Seven Great Lords fought together and ultimately overthrew the Great Dynasty, laying down the foundation for what would become the Seven Kingdoms.
Of course, such mystical matters could never be openly recorded in history. At best, it would be written that the Seven Great Lords were concerned for their people and united to overthrow a tyrant, filled with countless praises that concealed the truth.
The reality was that the Oath of Covenant came with a unique magic from that Great Mage, which ensured that all parties who signed the agreement would not harbor ill intentions towards each other for three years and would cooperate instead.
For instance, if one lord fought valiantly but lost all his soldiers and had no strength left at all while occupying vast territories filled with treasures, even if the other six lords felt envious or greedy, they would not entertain thoughts of taking everything for themselves. They would even extend friendly greetings; if assistance was needed, they could send soldiers to help. However, these soldiers would be obedient and would not attempt to seize control.
This was just an example of how the Oath of Covenant worked; in reality, it was impossible for the Seven Great Lords to exhaust all their forces. They would certainly retain some strength. Moreover, since the Oath of Covenant only lasted for three years, who would be foolish enough to deplete all their troops?
Was there really no fear when that three-year period ended? Nonetheless, it sufficiently demonstrated the power of the Oath of Covenant.
Idealism Magic is indeed devoid of logic and reason. This is why the White Snake Elder felt intrigued and was willing to listen further to the figure in the black robe. If there truly exists Covenant Magic, it’s possible that Evil Mages could collaborate on a large scale in the future. However, caution is still necessary; it’s not as if the mere mention of Covenant Magic would make the White Snake Elder gullibly believe it. Who knows what is true or false? One could easily present a simple trap magic item and claim it to be Covenant Magic, and just touching it could lead to instant death.
The figure in the black robe, however, seemed sincere. He raised his hand and produced a scroll. "Old Xian, don’t be nervous. I can either catch a wild beast at random, or you can specify one that would suffice as food for Bai She. I will then cast Covenant Magic on your Bai She and the beast. This way, we can discern the truth."
The White Snake Elder felt increasingly tempted; the fact that the other party allowed him to specify showed great confidence. Yet, he knew he couldn’t completely follow the other’s pace. Without any visible movement from the elder, two small snakes of different colors emerged from the eastern and western sides of the forest respectively. As they slithered outward, they did so without revealing their intentions.
