Inquilinar understood his old friend Reiner well enough to know that his serious demeanor meant there was something of great importance at hand. Their deep friendship, forged through countless discussions about the mysteries of magic and numerous adventures across the continent, prompted Inquilinar to offer his assistance without a second thought.
He had originally planned to take his newly recruited apprentice, Beric, to the edge of the Storm Province to see the sea and experience the breathtaking sight of rivers flowing into it. This would help Beric grasp the essence of his specialty, Flowing Flame Magic. However, upon reflection, he realized that the ocean could wait; when a friend was in trouble, immediate action was necessary.
Reiner's expression softened slightly as he reassured Inquilinar, "There's no need to worry so much; this is a good thing. I hope you can help me by inviting all the mages to the location of the exchange meeting."
Inquilinar felt a bit dazed; it seemed like Reiner was speaking in riddles that he couldn't quite comprehend. It was akin to a scenario from their school days when, during a brief break between classes, your best friend approached you with a serious face asking for help with something as trivial as letting students into the classroom. It left anyone bewildered—after all, class would start soon enough, and the other students would come in on their own. Why such a grave request?
Now Inquilinar found himself equally perplexed. The exchange meeting was a grand event among mages held every three years. Surely many mages would show up without needing his invitation. It wasn't like seventy years ago when they had just begun their journeys and needed to gather everyone together.
Fortunately, despite his outwardly fiery temperament, Inquilinar was perceptive enough to catch on quickly: Was there something significant happening? Were they going to hold the exchange meeting ahead of schedule? This was unprecedented; for over seventy years, these meetings had always occurred on time without any talk of early gatherings.
When Reiner mentioned it, his face lit up with anticipation, clearly excited by what he had learned: it concerned the Gate of Truth, which supposedly contained all truths and secrets of magic. Beric, who had been quietly listening, couldn't help but exclaim, "The Gate of Truth? That sounds incredible!"
Inquilinar felt a wave of skepticism wash over him. Having been immersed in the magical world for quite some time now, he had heard many tales—some far-fetched and others outright absurd. If anyone else had mentioned the Gate of Truth, especially someone skilled in Dark Magic, he would have dismissed it as nonsense without hesitation. But this was Reiner—honest and reliable Reiner—speaking earnestly about something so serious that it warranted an early gathering of mages.
Inquilinar had already believed seven parts of it; could there really be such a wondrous and mysterious door in the world?!
Reiner knew that anyone who first heard of the Gate of Truth would inevitably express some skepticism. Even he, when he first heard about it, was like a frog in a well, completely unable to believe.
Fortunately, this time out, Xu Liexian had given him several alchemical tools, enough for him to convince others.
Reiner pulled out two items: one was a small wooden board resembling a miniature Go game, square and about the size of his hand; the other was a bronze token.
"Inquilinar, take a look at this first." Reiner presented the small board in his left hand. "This item is called the Mage's Seeking Board. It can automatically explore within a hundred miles for any humanoid beings that possess magical power. Once it detects them, it locks onto their location and marks it on the board. The center represents my current position, and each square on the board corresponds to an actual distance of one mile. I used this to find you all."
