William was unsure about how the other Stealth Teams were doing; all he knew was that their mission was nearing completion. This was already the fifth food transport.
Their team had expanded from two trucks to three, with each person driving their own vehicle. As usual, they stood at the checkpoint for inspection, and the mercenaries had become quite familiar with the three of them, exchanging a few jokes. However, due to the ongoing state of martial law, the inspections remained strict.
William habitually stepped aside to allow space for the checks. "Anthony, you go first. This should be the last time, right?"
Their infiltration had gone smoothly thus far. According to Anthony's observations, they were close to concluding the food pressure situation faced by the Great Federation, Sherwood District. Rims relaxed as well, looking at Anthony with hopeful eyes.
Anthony nodded quietly, a smile hidden in his gaze. It was unclear whether he was satisfied that their infiltration mission was about to conclude or if he was looking forward to what would come next. Naturally, William and Rims, along with the viewers following their story, had no idea what Anthony was truly smiling about. They all assumed it was because the mission was nearing a successful completion.
Anthony, however, knew better; he had already received concrete information and had notified those who were coming to assist them. Seeing Anthony smile without saying anything seemed to satisfy William, who allowed himself a moment of joy.
He recalled recent news: unexpectedly, during their two days of transporting food, both Xina District and Saint Ann District had announced their independence from the Great Federation, following suit due to its influence. Xina District was a major grain-producing area; soon they would have no chance to engage in such smuggling operations again.
Rims felt a pang of concern and fatigue. "Hey, don’t think too much about it; let’s hurry up. The mercenaries have finished their checks."
Once the inspection was complete and the mercenaries signaled that they could leave, Anthony distributed a pack of cigarettes as usual before getting into his truck and starting the engine. He expertly handled his assigned vehicle—releasing the handbrake and pressing on the accelerator—listening as the engine roared from a low growl to a powerful roar.
William felt an incredible sense of pride; in just two days, he had mastered driving a truck despite only having a small vehicle license before this. He hoped this time they could finally wrap things up completely. Just as he voiced his hope, several armored vehicles approached nearby, making him feel like he might have jinxed it.
A walkie-talkie placed on the dashboard crackled to life with Anthony's command: "Hurry up! The Serpent's people are coming!"
There was no time to back out one by one; they had to charge forward!
William was taken aback. Was there really a need to rush like this? Leaving in such a hurry would surely raise suspicions. Their current identities were food smugglers; even if the Serpent's people were involved, they still needed to eat, right? Surely, there wouldn’t be a conflict...
Wait a minute. William suddenly realized that while the Serpent's people might not recognize him, they definitely knew Anthony!
In just two days, he had gotten so used to calling Anthony by his first name that he didn’t immediately think of Anthony’s position as the chief!
Damn it! William cursed under his breath and slammed the accelerator to the floor.
His reaction immediately drew laughter from a crowd of onlookers.
"Haha, look at that mouth! Did it get blessed or something?"
"This reminds me of a war movie I once saw, where the supporting character said he’d get married after this battle, only to end up dying."
"Does fate really not favor the righteous? Just one last food transport and they could complete their mission, and yet they run into the Serpent's people at this moment."
The Danmaku had no effect on the people of Script World.
