In the deep of night in the Great Federation's Sherwood District, Anthony had come here following Xu Lie's advice, or rather, he had prepared to cooperate with Charles. Indeed, Cobra Boss Charles had also been recalled by the Military-Industrial Complex.
The pinnacle of the metropolis's Black and White was about to converge once again in this Great Federation, Sherwood District. It was a critical time for personnel, and the Military-Industrial Complex knew that the Great Federation would not easily let them slip away; thus, they urgently summoned reinforcements from various locations.
William and Mers drove a large truck, obediently trailing behind Anthony's vehicle. This was their method of infiltration—disguised as merchants seeking profit, transporting food back and forth.
In the already quiet night, the sound of the truck's engine echoed far and wide, while lights illuminated the perimeter of the district. A few mercenaries stepped forward, waving their hands to signal them to stop for inspection.
Anthony was quite well-known in the metropolis, but that recognition was limited to that area. Once he changed locations, he hardly needed to worry about being recognized. Thus, he confidently got out of the vehicle for inspection.
With a familiar smile, he handed out cigarettes to the mercenaries. "Gentlemen, we're just here to earn a bit of money transporting food. I assure you there are no dangerous goods."
William and Mers exchanged glances as they got out behind him, both surprised. If they hadn’t witnessed it with their own eyes, they would have found it hard to believe that the high-ranking and sternly righteous Director Anthony could lower himself to interact with others like this.
Due to Anthony's amiable demeanor, the mercenaries didn’t say much. They allowed him to open the truck's rear compartment and instructed them to wait aside.
It was William’s first time doing such covert work, and he felt a bit anxious. "Director... Mr. Anthony, is everything alright?" He began with "Director," but then remembered Anthony’s instructions—here, he could no longer call him that; simply addressing him as "Sir" would suffice.
After all, during their time in the metropolis, they had represented justice and were guardians of order. When executing missions before, there was no need for such sneaky actions; they had always operated openly with flashing police lights.
Now suddenly transformed into rats swimming in murky waters, if William claimed he could adapt instantly, it would be somewhat self-deceptive.
Anthony remained calm and noticed that the mercenaries were only conducting casual inspections; in fact, no one seemed particularly wary of them. He quietly began explaining things further.
To calm the emotions of his two capable subordinates, he reassured them, "Don't worry."
Although the announcement had been made to break away from the Great Federation, was it really that easy to do so? This region was primarily industrial, with very few agricultural products. Without relying on external food supplies, the people here would struggle to survive.
Therefore, they would certainly welcome all merchants smuggling in food; that was their only hope for stabilizing the populace. In casual conversation, he did not reveal any details about the covert mission. Even if there were sharp-eared individuals among the Mercenaries who overheard, they would not suspect anything.
Soon, two individuals with metal detectors came down and reported that everything was fine; at least no metal had been detected. Only then did the Mercenaries lower their guard and allow Anthony and his companions to pass through.
William let out a sigh of relief, feeling a deep admiration in his heart. The director truly lived up to his title; he handled this kind of covert operation behind enemy lines so well. It seemed that back in the day, when Mr. Anthony had not yet succeeded to the position of director, he must have been an exceptionally outstanding investigator.
William realized he still had much to learn from him.
The truck smoothly entered the district. After some hassle, they found a buyer who purchased the truckload of food at a price slightly above the market rate. There was no choice; Anthony and his companions had transported too little to have any bargaining power.
