The next day, when Anthony arrived at the Investigation Bureau, he found William and Rims waiting at the door of his office. William, with dark circles under his eyes, was clutching a cup of black coffee, while Rims had his eyes closed, tightly holding onto a picture frame.
"Director, you're here!" William exclaimed with excitement upon seeing Anthony. His spirits lifted instantly, shaking off his fatigue. He nudged Rims awake.
Rims blinked sleepily, momentarily forgetting everything else. He tightened his grip on the picture frame to ensure it was still there before letting out a sigh of relief and noticing Anthony.
He quickly stood up. "Director."
"It seems you two had quite a fruitful trip," Anthony remarked, not paying much attention to the picture frame as he opened the office door and invited his subordinates inside.
He personally poured two cups of coffee for William and Rims. As he ground the coffee beans, William could hardly contain himself and was eager to report back. However, Anthony waved him off, signaling him to wait.
William felt like a ticking time bomb, pent up with frustration as he squirmed in place like an ant on a hot pan.
Finally, after taking his time to prepare the coffee, Anthony handed the cups to his subordinates and gestured for them to sit down. "William, Rims. You both did well, and I understand your anxiety. However, before we proceed with your report, I think it’s necessary to inform you of something."
William was growing impatient; what could possibly be more pressing than the messages from Xu Lie they held in their hands? He nearly interrupted Anthony's speech.
What Anthony was about to say was indeed significant: "The Investigation Bureau is going to be disbanded."
Afterward, all members of the Investigation Bureau under the Great Federation would be merged into the Alien Life Intelligence Agency.
William's mouth fell open in shock; he couldn't find any words to express his disbelief. It felt as if someone had struck him from behind with a heavy blow—his mind went blank, and his thoughts came to a halt.
The Investigation Bureau was going to cease to exist? The institution that had been in place since the emergence of the Great Federation was being entirely dismantled?
What do they even count for?
Battling the Serpent of Thorns at the port, suppressing rioters and maintaining order during the day, and burning the midnight oil investigating Xu Lie, while taking turns keeping watch and waiting for Anthony—was all of this suddenly rendered meaningless?
Not just William, but even the viewers binge-watching were left dumbfounded by this latest move from the Great Federation.
“I thought those old folks in the Online Meeting were just talking nonsense. They actually went through with it?”
“It’s not hard to understand. Those old geezers must be desperate to get their hands on the Alien Life’s Return to Youth drug, which is why they’re cooperating so eagerly. Besides, it’s just a crackdown; the entire Investigation Bureau is merging into the Alien Intelligence Agency. Not much else has changed.”
“Still, this will cause some initial chaos, and the ones paying the price won’t be those old geezers, but the innocent people at the bottom.”
Rims remained relatively calm. He was startled when he heard the news but quickly pieced it together: it was about Alien Life? He hadn’t forgotten that Alien Life had made demands of humanity, claiming they wanted to conduct research on collective human nature.
They needed humanity—or rather, they needed the Great Federation—to deal with the Investigation Bureau and Arms Company. As long as that could be accomplished, Alien Life would reward humanity with what they desired.
But was this efficiency a bit too quick? Even if there were some scoundrels within humanity's ranks trying to surrender, shouldn’t they be a little more patient?
