Xu Lie returned not to add to Lu Youyou's worries, but to lift her spirits. He immediately brightened his tone, saying, "Don't worry, Test Tube Technology has made significant breakthroughs. Industrial-scale production is just around the corner. Maybe in a month or two, I’ll be out."
Hearing this good news, Lu Youyou felt a wave of happiness wash over her, but she also realized that Xu Lie's appearance might only be temporary. "So what are you doing now?" she asked.
Xu Lie likened his situation to that of a prisoner: "Even inmates get to go outside for fresh air. Why would I want to stay locked up?" He added, "I took a day off under the pretext of being exhausted from research just to see you and share this news, so you wouldn’t worry."
The head of the research institute agreed that a balance between work and rest was necessary and allowed him to take a day off.
Lu Youyou wanted to retort with something playful like "Who’s worried about you?" but the words never made it out. Instead, she held onto Xu Lie's arm tightly. No words were needed; that simple gesture spoke volumes about how much she had been concerned for him and missed him during their time apart.
Gradually, the electric scooter came to a stop. They had arrived at the school, and Lu Youyou felt a pang of melancholy. Why couldn’t they have gone slower? Why couldn’t time move a little more slowly? Happy moments always seemed fleeting. She sighed, thinking how nice it would be if the journey from home to Ancheng University could take longer.
"Is this really my university? It feels so big!" she exclaimed.
They stopped by the roadside, looking around but unable to spot the school gate. Lu Youyou asked innocently, "Where’s Ancheng University?"
Xu Lie felt a bit embarrassed; no matter how thick-skinned he was, he couldn't help but feel awkward at that moment. He hesitated before replying, "Do you know how to get to Ancheng University?"
He wasn’t local and couldn’t navigate since he needed both hands on the handlebars of the scooter.
An awkward silence fell between them as they both sensed a flock of crows flying overhead, cawing ominously as if mocking them silently.
"Get out! Let me drive!" Lu Youyou finally said after some back and forth.
After some twists and turns, they finally arrived at Ancheng University. Fortunately, the weather was clear; there was no delay in their arrival.
As Lu Youyou got off the scooter, she muttered, "What a hassle."
She realized that Xu Lie was quite the trickster—he had given her a ride only to have her return the favor. It seemed he was taking full advantage of her kindness.
Inside Ancheng University, each department had clearly marked registration points, making it easy for her to find her way. She quickly completed her registration.
Pulling Xu Lie along with her, she began exploring the campus and planned to have lunch together later. "This is great! I heard that students living on campus now have single rooms."
Xu Lie never expected that university students in this world lived so well. Back when he was in college, he had to share a room with seven other people. But then again, considering the population crisis in this world, it made sense that single rooms were available.
"Why don’t you live on campus if you’re so envious?" he asked.
Lu Youyou, with her hands behind her back, took a step back while facing Xu Lie. "My home is nearby."
The two of them chatted aimlessly, and the passing university students didn’t cast any surprised glances their way. Xu Lie couldn’t help but feel a bit wistful; the excitement had faded.
He used to be quite the internet celebrity in the world of "Not Allowed to Fall in Love." Just a little appearance would send fans rushing at him like sharks sensing blood in the water. Now, after just a short time, hardly anyone recognized him anymore.
When they reached a small pond on campus, and there were few people around, Xu Lie took out an album. "Take a look at this; I hope you like it. It’s a gift I prepared for you."
