Several hours had passed since the highly publicized trial.
Lu Youyou watched as Mo Mei Lin stepped off the elevator and approached her, feeling a bit nervous. "Sister Mo, can I see him now?"
"Yes, you can," Mo Mei Lin sighed. The mood among the entire Special Investigation Team was quite complex at the moment.
Was there joy? Certainly, capturing Xu Lie and solving the bombing case meant that every team member would receive rewards from their superiors.
Was there resentment? Yes, there was; it was hard to believe that Xu Lie had managed to escape the consequences of Reform Through Labor.
Was there anger? Not really. Although Xu Lie had been a bit of a jerk, the Test Tube Technology he presented, if true, could genuinely help overcome the Population Crisis. This was a matter of great significance for humanity's survival, and the members of the Special Investigation Team were not blind to the situation.
Xu Lie's circumstances had improved; he was now living much like Lu Youyou had during her internship with the Special Investigation Team—eating well and sleeping well. He could even wander around the office as long as he didn’t try to escape; no one would bother him.
Everyone else seemed fine with it, except for Zhang Yutao, who couldn’t stand Xu Lie and locked himself in his office every day, fearing he might get riled up again.
Now that Lu Youyou had been given permission to see Xu Lie after previously being unable to do so, she hurriedly asked Mo Mei Lin about it.
"Really? Thank you so much, Sister Mo!" After three days of assisting in the investigation, Lu Youyou had developed a good rapport with Mo Mei Lin.
"Alright, come with me," Mo Mei Lin said, chuckling at Lu Youyou's eager demeanor. "You seem quite attached to Xu Lie."
"I’m starting to wonder if you’ve ever been threatened by him," she teased. "Those testimonies you gave earlier weren’t just a trick to fool your sister, were they?"
Lu Youyou blushed slightly and laughed awkwardly, unsure how to respond. Indeed, her efforts on behalf of Xu Lie did not resemble those of a threatened victim at all.
Seeing this, Mo Mei Lin shook her head inwardly. It seemed that the psychologist's conclusion was wrong; Lu Youyou did not have Stockholm syndrome but was simply a young girl in love.
At this point, Mo Mei Lin lost interest in probing further. Regardless of what Lu Youyou felt or thought, it was all over now. She didn’t say more and led Lu Youyou upstairs.
Returning to familiar territory felt particularly refreshing for Lu Youyou. While assisting in the investigation at the Special Investigation Team before, she had been worried about Xu Lie; now that she learned he might be safe after contributing significant technology, her mood was entirely different.
Looking at the potted plants in the office brought her genuine joy.
Mo Mei Lin glanced at Lu Youyou.
Witnessing the vibrant energy and excitement of the youthful girl, she couldn't help but question herself: was her decision to come here, as Xu Lie had said, truly a form of entrapment?
Before the two could reach Xu Lie's lounge, they unexpectedly ran into him while he was casually strolling around.
Xu Lie was equally surprised to see Lu Youyou at the Special Investigation Team.
“Xu Lie!” Lu Youyou exclaimed, rushing forward. Her loud call startled Mo Mei Lin, who stood nearby.
Amused, Mo Mei Lin paused for a moment but decided not to linger. She turned and left, giving the two ample space for their conversation.
Xu Lie also masked his surprise: “Thank you. If it weren't for your help, there wouldn't have been so many students willing to speak on my behalf.”
“Huh?” Lu Youyou opened her mouth slightly in surprise. “How did you know?”
