In the office of the Special Investigation Team, Zhang Yutao felt an immense pressure weighing down on him. He downed his cup of strong tea in one go and instinctively slammed the cup onto the solid wood table, producing a dull thud that echoed in the room.
An assistant who had come in to refill Zhang Yutao's tea sensed his frustration but felt powerless to alleviate it. Like Ancheng's original lead investigator on the bombing case, Zhang Yutao was under intense pressure from above to solve the case quickly. However, it had been three days since Xu Lie had gone missing, and the Special Investigation Team still had no leads.
Even though they had identified a suspect and were fairly certain that the same person was behind both bombing incidents, without an arrest, all their efforts were merely excuses. Zhang Yutao had ordered an immediate investigation as soon as Xu Lie disappeared, even coordinating with airports and train stations to prevent the suspect from fleeing Ancheng. Yet now, it felt as if Xu Lie had vanished into thin air; they could not find any trace of him.
Despite deploying a large number of personnel and reviewing all surveillance footage from airports and train stations over the past three days, conducting repeated facial recognition checks and comparisons, they still found no sign of Xu Lie. It was equally impossible to rule out that he might still be in Ancheng; with so many small roads leading out of the city, it was impossible for the Special Investigation Team to cover every exit.
Continuing to search in Ancheng felt like searching for a needle in a haystack, and many team members speculated that Xu Lie had likely left the city. Zhang Yutao waved his hand dismissively at his assistant, signaling not to refill his tea; he had drunk too much at once and felt a bit bloated. Was it really going to come down to relying on a young girl?
In those three days, the Special Investigation Team had done everything they could—tracking phone locations, investigating Xu Lie's entire social network—yet they had come up empty-handed. The only significant connection they found was with Lu Youyou, which led Zhang Yutao to speculate that Xu Lie might try to contact her. Thus, he decided to temporarily enlist Lu Youyou's help in the investigation.
To reassure Lu Youyou's parents, Mo Mei Lin took charge of this matter, speaking highly of their intentions to Lu Ba and Lu Ma, assuring them that there would be compensation and an internship certificate involved. They even promised to include Lu Youyou's contributions in her file, which would be beneficial for her future.
Finally, Lu Ba and Lu Ma were put at ease and reminded Lu Youyou to assist the Special Investigation Team diligently. However, Lu Youyou felt utterly confused; how did she go from being an accomplice of Xu Lie to being part of the Special Investigation Team?
She didn’t know anything! How could she possibly help?
The Special Investigation Team neither showed her any surveillance footage nor sent her out for field visits; instead, they assigned her a resting room. Essentially, she spent her time eating, playing on her phone until she got tired, sleeping, waking up to eat again—idly passing time made her feel like she was turning into a salted fish.
Fortunately, a psychologist was attentive to the mental health issues of minors and occasionally asked Mo Mei Lin to check in with Lu Youyou about some questions regarding Xu Lie.
Lu Youyou felt a slight sense of purpose in her work; otherwise, she would surely drive herself to madness from boredom.
Understanding this, the assistant promptly replied, "It should be fine."
Even though Xu Lie hadn’t used his phone or internet accounts for the past three days, humans are inherently social creatures. After being alone for too long, one inevitably yearns for connection with others.
Just because Xu Lie could endure three days of solitude didn’t mean he could withstand it for a lifetime.
Zhang Yutao raised his hand and lightly gestured at the assistant, saying, "You, you."
He recognized that the assistant was trying to provide emotional support and comfort him with kind words. Did he really have such weak willpower that he needed reassurance?
It seemed the assistant meant well, so he refrained from scolding him.
