A servant, his face filled with excitement, pointed ahead and shouted, "Fourth Prince, look! That city up ahead is Jiangcheng!"
Lin Feng immediately turned his gaze toward the distance. Before him lay a massive city, sprawling like a slumbering giant across the horizon. The city walls towered into the clouds, imparting a sense of solemn grandeur. However, it struck him as odd that at this moment, there was not a soul in sight near the city; the surroundings were eerily silent, as if time had come to a standstill.
Upon closer inspection, he noticed shadows moving along the city walls, bustling with activity as if they were engaged in some urgent task.
Suddenly, Lin Feng shouted, "Let's go!" Without hesitation, he spurred his horse forward, racing toward Jiangcheng.
Before long, they arrived at the Yamen of Jiangcheng Prefecture. Outside the Yamen, several large pots steamed with hot food, surrounded by scattered old bowls and remnants of meals. Next to the pots stood a few tattered tents crammed with ragged citizens shivering from the cold.
The ground that should have been covered in thick snow had been cleared meticulously, with only a few patches of ice remaining in the corners.
At that moment, a figure in official attire was weaving through the crowd, busily directing his subordinates with various tasks. Suddenly, a Yayi rushed over to the County Magistrate and whispered urgently, "Sir, the Fourth Prince has arrived!"
Upon hearing this news, the Jiangcheng Prefect paused for a moment in surprise before quickly setting aside his work and turning to look in the distance. Indeed, a grand procession was slowly approaching.
As the procession drew near, the County Magistrate straightened his sleeves and hurried forward to greet them. He bowed deeply and said, "I am Jiangcheng Prefect; I pay my respects to Your Highness, Fourth Prince!"
Seeing this, Lin Feng quickly dismounted and helped the County Magistrate to his feet with a smile. "Ah, Governor, please rise! There’s no need for such formalities!"
Lin Feng looked at those around him and addressed the County Magistrate. "Governor, what is the current situation regarding the disaster? Please tell me in detail!"
The two of them slowly walked into the Yamen. Lin Feng noticed that Jiangcheng Prefect wore a frown as he pondered for a moment before finally speaking. "Yesterday, after a rough estimate, we found that there are approximately over three thousand disaster victims in the city. In recent days, I have mobilized all available manpower to clear the snow and ensure that roads remain open."
He continued, "We have also set up many temporary tents in front of the Yamen and established porridge kitchens to provide shelter and food for the victims. However, we are currently facing a critical issue: our food reserves are nearly depleted. These tents can only serve as a temporary solution and cannot be used for an extended period."
He sighed heavily before concluding, "We urgently need a large supply of food and sufficient warm clothing to meet the basic needs of these disaster victims!"
Lin Feng nodded slightly, indicating his approval, and then said, "Yes, you have done well. There is no need to worry too much about the supplies. Given the current situation, how much longer can the city hold out?"
It must be said that the Prefect of Jiangcheng had indeed performed admirably under such difficult circumstances. He did not abandon the suffering citizens but instead took immediate action to provide them with at least basic food and shelter.
The Prefect of Jiangcheng respectfully replied, "In response to the Fourth Prince, based on the current supply reserves, if no other unforeseen circumstances arise, we should be able to sustain ourselves for another four to five days."
