The snow fell in large, fluffy flakes, as if it intended to envelop the entire world in a blanket of pure white. This heavy snowfall had continued for several days without any sign of letting up.
Within the magnificent Inner Palace of the Imperial Palace, Wu Emperor Lin Zhen gazed out through the intricately carved window, noticing the swirling snowflakes outside. Due to the many palace servants assigned to clear the accumulating snow, the ground remained clean and tidy, leaving him without a clear idea of just how thick the snow had piled up.
Time passed swiftly, and soon it was the seventh day. On this day, the holiday was declared over, and court officials returned to the hall to resume their duties.
Lin Zhen, dressed in a splendid Dragon Robe, sat upright on the dragon throne that symbolized supreme power. His expression was as cold as ice, making it difficult for anyone to discern his true thoughts and emotions.
At that moment, a minister stepped forward from the ranks, respectfully kneeling and saying, "Your Majesty, I have something to report!"
Hearing this, Lin Zhen couldn't help but feel a sense of despair: "Sigh, just after the New Year, can't I have a moment of peace?" He had barely settled into his throne when reports began flooding in.
However, as a ruler of a nation, he had no choice but to attend to these matters, no matter how reluctant he felt. With a furrowed brow filled with worry and helplessness, he slowly raised his hand and weakly waved it, signaling for the minister to present the report.
Taking the document from the minister's hands, he casually opened it. But as soon as his eyes fell upon its contents, his expression changed dramatically; the laziness that had lingered just moments before vanished without a trace. His once small eyes widened in disbelief as if they might pop out of their sockets, his face reflecting sheer incredulity.
In an instant, the entire court fell into a deathly silence; all eyes were fixed on Lin Zhen. He stood frozen in place, his body stiff as if struck by lightning, completely unable to react.
After what felt like an eternity, he finally snapped back to reality and trembled as he asked, "What exactly happened?"
The minister quickly stepped forward and bowed deeply. "Your Majesty, this data was compiled three days ago by the Jiangcheng Prefect. Reports indicate that over a thousand houses have collapsed locally. Preliminary statistics suggest that several people have already frozen to death due to the severe cold, and this number continues to rise."
Upon hearing this news, Lin Zhen could no longer remain seated. He abruptly stood up with wide-open eyes and shouted angrily, "What is the Jiangcheng Prefect doing? Why was such a serious disaster not reported sooner? Immediately send people for rescue; we must ensure the safety of our subjects!"
Before he could finish speaking, another official rushed into the hall and called out loudly, "Your Majesty! Another report has just arrived from outside; it is from various County Magistrates."
Lin Zhen felt a tightening in his chest, an ominous premonition rising within him. After he received and carefully reviewed the documents, he discovered that the areas affected by the disaster extended far beyond Jiangcheng; many other regions had also suffered from this rare heavy snowfall.
Lin Zhen's expression grew serious, but he did not succumb to panic. He understood clearly that the most urgent task at hand was to collaborate with everyone to devise a response strategy.
