She fixed her gaze on her husband's eyes, trying to find a hint of something within them. Faced with his wife's probing look and questions, Li Hao simply shook his head gently and sighed, "Oh, don't ask. Just pack your things." He added that once they reached the south, everything would become clear.
After saying this, he turned away, not sparing another glance at Li Wangshi, as if burdened by an unspeakable secret.
In the dim light of the night, silence enveloped the room, yet neither of them felt the slightest inclination to sleep. Li Wangshi tossed and turned restlessly, her mind tangled with her husband's unusual behavior, which left her feeling deeply unsettled.
On the other side, Li Hao lay awake as well, staring blankly at the top of the tent, his thoughts a chaotic mess. Time passed slowly, each second feeling like an eternity.
Finally, after a long silence, Li Wangshi could no longer suppress her anxiety and confusion. She spoke softly, "Husband, we have been together for many years through thick and thin. Is there anything between us that cannot be openly shared? No matter how difficult the challenges we face may be, we should confront them together."
As she finished speaking, she turned her head and looked earnestly at Li Hao.
Realizing he could no longer keep his secrets hidden under his wife's persistent questioning, Li Hao let out a long sigh and slowly revealed the truth.
When Li Wangshi heard what her husband had to say, her expression instantly hardened, and a hint of distress crossed her face. She finally understood why he was caught in such a dilemma.
After a moment of contemplation, she gritted her teeth and said, "Husband, even if those people from the Fourth Prince's Mansion want to open a shop here, do they really dare to take lives in broad daylight?"
Li Hao replied, "It's hard to say. They have power and influence; we are just merchants. What can we do?"
Li Wangshi sighed and said, "If that's the case, then we should leave tomorrow."
Time flew by like a fleeting shadow, and soon it was the next morning. Sunlight streamed through the clouds onto the earth, casting a golden glow over everything.
At this moment, however, Li Hao's family had no heart to appreciate the beautiful scenery; they were facing an unexpected upheaval.
Li Hao hurriedly made his way to the city’s market, contemplating how to sell their belongings. Once the transaction was complete, he would take the money and flee with his family far away from this place of turmoil.
Meanwhile, at home, Li Wangshi was also busy. She moved swiftly to pack their clothes and daily necessities carefully into bags while eagerly anticipating her husband's swift return.
Time quietly flowed by, and as she waited from morning until night, her husband still had not returned. Li Wangshi began to feel restless, pondering to herself: he merely went to the fabric shop; why was he delayed for so long? Anxiety and worry surged within her like a tide, making her increasingly anxious.
Just after nine o'clock in the evening, a sudden sound of hurried footsteps echoed from outside the door. Li Wangshi's heart leaped with joy, thinking her husband had finally come back, and she quickly got up to greet him. However, when the door swung open, it was not her longed-for husband who stood before her, but several officials dressed in uniforms, their expressions grave—members of the Inspection Office led by Chai Yi.
One of the officers, with a blank expression, addressed Li Wangshi: "Madam, your fabric shop has unfortunately suffered a fire. A charred body has been found inside. Please accompany us to identify it."
