As evening approached, the sun dipped low in the west, casting its warm glow over the small courtyard.
The elderly woman noticed Lin Feng and Lu An finishing their tasks and couldn't help but ask, "Young gentlemen, may I inquire where you are headed this time?"
Lin Feng politely replied, "Ma'am, we are on our way to Linbo County to attend to some matters."
Upon hearing this, a hint of worry crossed the old woman's face as she slowly said, "It would be wise for you both to leave this place as soon as your business is concluded."
Lin Feng was taken aback, his expression filled with confusion as he pressed on, "Why is that?"
Hearing this, Feng's heart stirred with curiosity. He thought to himself: There must be more to this situation than what the old woman is saying! He looked at her, his gaze filled with inquiry.
"Have you two heard that in the past two years, strange occurrences have been happening around here?" the old woman began. "Many people have mysteriously vanished without a trace." Her face grew serious as she continued.
Lin Feng's eyes widened in surprise, his spirit suddenly alert. He eagerly asked, "What? Such bizarre events? Ma'am, what exactly is going on?"
The old woman sighed and shook her head helplessly. "Alas, I do not know the reasons behind it. How could perfectly healthy individuals just disappear without a cause? It truly baffles the mind!" Lin Feng furrowed his brow and murmured to himself.
At that moment, Lu An, who had been silent beside them, spoke up. "Ma'am, could you please think back carefully? Were there any unusual occurrences at the time of these incidents? For instance, were there any clues left behind?"
The old woman pondered for a moment before recalling the events of that day: "That morning, my son left for work as usual. When noon came, my daughter-in-law prepared a meal to bring him. However, when she arrived at the field, she found no sign of him—only some disordered footprints left on the ground. Since then, he has been missing for months now. It's strange; all those who have disappeared were young and strong men."
"Therefore," she continued with concern in her voice, "I believe it would be best for you two to leave this place quickly to avoid any unforeseen dangers."
After listening to the old woman's account, Lin Feng understood much of what was happening. He thought to himself: Based on what I know so far, these disappearances are no coincidence; someone must be behind them. But who is this hidden hand? What could their purpose be? It seems further investigation is necessary to uncover the truth.
With this in mind, he turned to Lu An and they exchanged a knowing glance.
Lin Feng then asked, "Does your son have any enemies?"
"Alas, no," she replied. "We are all honest farmers here; we wouldn't have any grudges that would lead to such extremes."
Lin Feng nodded slightly in acknowledgment. At that moment, Lu An, with a look of confusion, asked, "Have other families in your village experienced similar situations?"
The old man quickly replied, "Yes, some have!"
Lu An felt that the matter was becoming increasingly strange and pressed further, "How many people are we talking about?"
After pondering for a moment, the old man answered, "As far as I know, there are about seven or eight, and their disappearances happened around the same time as my son's."
Lu An furrowed his brow and continued to inquire, "In that case, have you reported this to the Government Office?"
The old man nodded heavily and sighed, "Yes, we all went to the county office. The County Magistrate even sent people to investigate, but they couldn't find any clues."
Hearing this, Lu An silently contemplated; this matter was likely more complicated than he had initially thought.
