However, the moment he stepped out of the tent, he was astonished to find his entire tribe surrounded by a formidable force. Looking around, he saw soldiers from the Wu Kingdom clad in sturdy armor, wielding sharp weapons, standing tall and imposing.
Seeing this scene, Mardu suddenly realized that had he chosen not to surrender yesterday, his entire tribe would have faced annihilation; the complete destruction of their forces would have been merely a matter of time.
Though Mardu felt a sense of doubt within, he maintained a calm demeanor on the surface. He clasped his fists in greeting to Lin Feng and paid his respects to General Lin.
"Please rise, Chief," Lin Feng said.
Looking at Mardu, Lin Feng continued, "I understand that you may have some concerns about why I am relocating you all to Tongguan. In truth, that place is currently undergoing significant development, with thriving commerce and stable living conditions. I am considering the well-being of your tribe."
Upon hearing this, Mardu felt somewhat relieved. "Thank you for your kindness, General. However, many of my people have lived here for years; I wonder if they will adapt to the customs and environment there?"
Lin Feng smiled. "Tongguan is a place where many tribes converge and embrace diversity; you will not be disappointed. Moreover, I still need to ask you some questions."
"Please go ahead, General," Mardu replied promptly.
"I would like to know about the situation of the nearby Small Tribes—such as their numbers, military strength, and customs."
Mardu pondered for a moment before slowly responding. "In answer to your inquiry, there are no fewer than ten tribes in this vicinity. Three of them are similar in size to my tribe with around a thousand members each; the rest are mostly smaller Small Tribes with only a few hundred people. The strongest among them, aside from my tribe, is the Hada Tribe, whose cavalry is particularly fierce. As for their customs, most tribes follow the water and grasslands and revere nature."
Lin Feng nodded slightly, calculating in his mind. "That is very good. Once we relocate to Tongguan, I will ensure that each tribe receives appropriate arrangements based on what you have reported."
Mardu once again clasped his fists in gratitude.
Lin Feng scrutinized Mardu and slowly spoke again: "Mardu, for your tribe to become citizens of the Wu Kingdom, you must first relocate to Tongguan for resettlement. This is to prevent any deceit; once stability is achieved, you will not be treated unfairly."
Mardu hurriedly responded, "General, I understand your intentions. I swear on the lives of everyone in my tribe that we will sincerely submit."
Lin Feng nodded slightly. "I hope you remember your words today. Let us set off for Tongguan now; brave soldiers will escort you along the way."
Lin Feng immediately wrote a letter to Lin Ting explaining the situation.
Mardu led his people on their journey to Tongguan. Along the way, he continually reassured his tribesmen to calm their anxious hearts. Meanwhile, Lin Feng sent men to closely monitor their movements.
Days later, Mardu's tribe arrived safely at Tongguan. Lin Ting instructed local officials to arrange suitable housing and farmland for them as directed.
This was all on the other side, and it was because of Lin Feng that he could be saved.
After making arrangements with Mardu, Lin Feng sent soldiers to scout the way as instructed.
Indeed, as he had said, when the soldiers returned, they marked the conditions of those tribes on the map.
Although each tribe was not powerful individually, if they united, they could muster thousands of people.
Given this situation, caution was imperative.
