In the afternoon of a summer day, sunlight filtered through the gaps in the leaves, casting dappled shadows on the ground.
Liang Yan sat quietly in a chair inside Guanyin Inn, his gaze fixed on the cheerful figure at the door. His younger sister, Liang Siqi, bounced in with an excited smile plastered across her face. Behind her, a maid carried two bundles filled with various snacks and intriguing trinkets, clearly just purchased from outside.
Liang Siqi hopped over to Liang Yan and placed her items on the table, eagerly exclaiming, "Er Ge, come look at this!"
With a smile, Liang Yan rose to greet his sister, his eyes filled with affection. "Oh? Sister, what fun treasures have you found today?"
Giggling, Liang Siqi reached into one of the bags and pulled out a treat, handing it to Liang Yan. "Er Ge, you have to try this! It's so delicious!"
Liang Yan took the food from his sister and examined it closely; it resembled a pastry he had seen before. He took a gentle bite, and instantly, a sweet flavor burst in his mouth. The texture was soft and delicate, leaving a lingering taste that was delightful.
"Mm, this is quite good!" Liang Yan nodded in satisfaction and smiled at his sister.
Though Liang Yan was smiling, Liang Siqi sensed something amiss with her brother and asked with concern, "Eh? Er Ge, what's wrong? Is something bothering you?"
Xia Yan sighed softly and slowly returned to his chair. "Sister," he began gently, "Father has sent us to Wu Kingdom to seek assistance and form an alliance."
He paused for a moment before continuing, " Jing Kingdom has been aggressively invading our borders, and our people are suffering greatly from the ravages of war. Father is deeply worried about this."
He continued, "That is why I have come to Wu Kingdom; he hopes we can ally together to resist Jing Kingdom's invasion."
Upon hearing this, Liang Siqi's expression turned serious with concern.
Liang Yan added, "I have already sent someone ahead, but we have yet to receive any news after several days."
Just then, a commotion outside Guanyin Inn caught their attention. The siblings exchanged puzzled glances.
Before long, a servant rushed in and reported breathlessly, "Second Prince, His Highness the Crown Prince of Wu has arrived."
Liang Yan quickly straightened his clothes and stepped outside to welcome him. There stood Crown Prince Lin Zheng, tall and imposing, flanked by a group of attendants.
After exchanging greetings, the two entered the house.
The Crown Prince of Wu smiled and said, "This prince has heard that an envoy from Your Country has arrived, and I am here to inform Second Prince that His Majesty has been busy with state affairs lately, but you may meet with the Liang Guo Mission tomorrow."
Liang Yan felt a surge of joy in his heart and quickly replied, "Thank you, Your Highness."
Once Crown Prince Lin Zheng left, only the siblings remained in Guanyin Inn.
Liang Yan couldn't shake off the image of Lin Zheng's gaze when he looked at his sister, a sense of unease creeping into his heart.
