The events of last night had a significant impact. Early the next morning, the parties involved—Hu Ruoyun, Cui Shuigen, and Aiyashamu—greeted their counselor and, along with Lai Wen, headed to the University Road Police Station to inquire about the progress of the case.
The female officer on duty appeared impatient, deflecting their questions with a haughty attitude. "This matter no longer concerns you. It's up to us to follow the proper procedures... We are not obligated to provide you with any updates!"
Hu Ruoyun, Cui Shuigen, and Aiyashamu had never encountered such a situation before and were unsure if what she said was right or wrong. However, Lai Wen was not one to be easily dismissed. "As one of the parties involved, I have the right to know what is happening. As of now, we have no idea if you have filed a case. As victims, we deserve to be informed! Otherwise, I can report this to the prosecution! Can you take responsibility for what you just said?"
As she spoke, she produced a copy of the latest Jiangcheng Evening News, where a prominently displayed headline read: "Female University Student Nearly Abducted on Campus; Identity of Suspect Unknown." The article detailed how several unidentified men armed with stun guns and batons attempted to abduct two female students around 9:40 PM last night but were apprehended by faculty and security personnel at Jiangbei University and handed over to the Jiangcheng Public Security Bureau at the University Road Police Station.
The officer skimmed through the newspaper. "We haven't seen any reporters interviewing anyone; this report is inaccurate..."
Lai Wen presented her press credentials. "I am one of the parties involved; do I need to interview myself? Where is your chief? Please have your chief come out to speak with me. I am now conducting an interview as a reporter. You are in uniform and are responsible for our reception here; everything you just said will be taken as your department's official stance!"
The officer's face paled. While some things could be handled privately, making such statements publicly could lead to serious repercussions that would tarnish the entire police force's image. Even a duty officer like her could not bear that responsibility.
The officer asked them to wait momentarily and went inside to report. Soon after, Chang Zhifa emerged from behind her. He extended his hand toward Lai Wen's group from a distance. "Reporter Lai, right? Come on; let's talk in my office..."
In Chang Zhifa's office, still irritated by the earlier behavior of the female officer, Lai Wen wasted no time getting to the point. "Director Chang, I want to know if we have filed a case regarding yesterday's abduction incident."
Chang Zhifa hesitated before responding, "Well... not yet."
Lai Wen pressed on, "So there hasn't been a case filed! Let me ask again: are the three suspects who openly wielded weapons on campus still in custody?"
Chang Zhifa replied reluctantly, "Um... they were released last night..."
He continued with difficulty, "But Reporter Lai, this situation is certainly beyond my control as chief... Could I ask you and your classmates to return to school for now? We can discuss this in detail later."
Lai Wen agreed to let Hu Ruoyun, Cui Shuigen, and Aiyashamu head back.
Everything that happened last night was bewildering even for Chang Zhifa himself. The individuals brought in by Jiangbei University's security department admitted they were security personnel and drivers from Tian Shang Ren Jia and claimed they had come to Jiangbei University merely to take some students out for fun without any intention of abduction or violence. They explained that the batons and stun guns they carried were standard equipment for security personnel.
Then Chang Zhifa received an informal phone call from his superiors: "Hey Chang, I heard you apprehended some people from Tian Shang Ren Jia... It’s all a misunderstanding… Have their unit apologize to the students who were frightened and offer some compensation..."
They were all young people, just a bit impulsive, without any subjective criminal intent... Let’s put it this way, I’ve notified them to come and pick someone up from you!”
And so, the situation unfolded like this.
Lai Wen knew that what Director Chang said was likely true; focusing solely on this police station was not very meaningful. In the end, Lai Wen said to Chang Zhifa, “As the person involved, I cannot accept or understand your situation. As a reporter, I will continue to follow this matter!”
Chang Zhifa clasped his hands in a salute, “Reporter Lai, I… I am also powerless in this situation. Rest assured, whatever you decide to do next, I will understand!”
However, what Lai Wen did not expect was how quickly things developed. The other party's combination of responses was relentless and completely exceeded her expectations for how the situation would progress:
Zhao Yingying, the PR manager of Tian Shang Ren Jia, personally came to Jiangcheng University and made a formal apology to Aiyashamu, a Chinese Language and Literature major who had been frightened that night, through the Student Affairs Office and Teacher Zhou. They also offered 1,000 yuan as compensation for emotional distress!
A vice president named Chen Mingyi from Tian Shang Ren Jia brought along security personnel and delivered the three involved—Zhao Yincai, Cui Jiu Cheng, and Shui Zonghua—to the University Road Police Station, requesting legal action against them.
The general manager of Tian Shang Ren Jia, Batu Hai, even came to the Jiangcheng Evening News Agency to formally apologize to Ms. Laiwen and offered her 1,000 yuan as compensation for emotional distress, which was declined by Reporter Lai.
Additionally, according to an internal handling document forwarded by Chang Zhifa, the director of University Road Police Station: Officer Zhang Chunhua from Jiangcheng Public Security Bureau's Xi City Branch received criticism for being unenthusiastic in handling public visits and having a poor attitude. This severely affected the image of public security officers and resulted in demotion and a serious warning.
According to relevant regulations such as the Public Security Administration Punishment Regulations, Zhao Yincai, Cui Jiu Cheng, and Shui Zonghua were sentenced to ten days of detention and fined 500 yuan for possessing controlled weapons and creating disturbances.
Lai Wen found it impossible to focus on her second article; naturally, it was taken down. Although she felt extremely reluctant about it, she had no other options left. Tian Shang Ren Jia had managed to handle every potential issue flawlessly, which left her both impressed and contemplative about the expertise behind it.
Aiyashamu asked Hu Ruoyun to thank Sister Lai Wen for her help. This time class leader Ji Hongmin also joined them. However, they coincidentally ran into Chang Zhifa from University Road Police Station in Lai Wen's office.
Seeing that they couldn't have a proper conversation in the office, Chang Zhifa said, “Reporter Lai, there’s no time like the present. Let’s go out today; I’ll treat you all!”
At Xiangli Family near the school, Chang Zhifa first reassured Aiyashamu: “Don’t worry; such incidents won’t happen again.” He also left his phone number with several people: “No matter what happens next time, if any illegal activity occurs again, just call me directly!”
He then said to Hu Ruoyun: “That night, your group of boys was quite ruthless; that guy named Shui ended up with three broken ribs…”
Hu Ruoyun clinked his beer with him: “There were many people that night; it was dark and chaotic. Plus that guy pulled out a baton; some students might have gone a bit too far.”
Lai Wen exchanged glances with Hu Ruoyun but didn’t say anything further.
