Early the next morning, just as dawn was breaking, I set off with the villagers.
I had packed two old hens in a leather pouch, while the villagers were armed with torches, sticks, and iron chains.
With everything ready, the twenty or so men made their way into the mountains.
The Village Chief walked beside me at the front, his face filled with tension.
I felt a bit anxious myself, but I had to maintain a calm facade.
“Tian Qi, do you really have a plan?”
The Village Chief turned to ask me.
I nodded and replied, “Don’t worry, Village Chief. I, Tian Qi, will not let you down this time.
Though the wolf pack is formidable, they have their weaknesses.
As long as we seize the right opportunity, we can definitely take them down.”
We continued deeper into the mountains and soon discovered signs of the wolf pack.
There were deep paw prints on the ground and some claw marks on the tree trunks.
I crouched down to examine them closely before looking up at the Village Chief and saying, “The wolf pack is nearby; we need to be cautious.”
We pressed on and not long after, we spotted several wolves pacing back and forth not far ahead.
They noticed us immediately and became alert, their eyes glinting with menace.
I quickly signaled for the villagers to stop and whispered, “Don’t be afraid; these are just young Wolf Cubs.
Let’s try to scare them off first.”
I pulled out some powdered medicine from my pocket, sprinkled it on the ground, and then shouted loudly:
"Get lost, you beasts!"
The wolves were startled by my voice and took a few steps back.
Seizing the opportunity, I charged forward with the villagers, waving the torch in my hand as we ran.
The wolf pack seemed to be frightened by the flames and turned to flee.
I laughed heartily and said to the Village Chief,
"Village Chief, see? The wolf pack isn't so formidable after all!"
The Village Chief nodded, a hint of relief on his face.
"Tian Qi, your method really works."
I smiled, but inside I felt a bit uneasy.
I knew well that these little Wolf Cubs were merely an appetizer; the real opponent was still ahead.
The Wolf King would not be so easy to deal with.
We continued onward and soon arrived at a valley.
A strong smell of blood lingered in the air, and there were clear bloodstains on the ground, indicating that the wolf pack had just fed here.
I frowned and said softly,
"Village Chief, something's not right here. The Wolf King must be nearby."
The Village Chief nodded, a look of tension crossing his face.
"Tian Qi, what should we do now?"
I surveyed the surroundings and instructed the villagers to dig a large pit in the clearing.
In the pit, we set up several sharpened wooden stakes and sprinkled plenty of medicinal powder over them. We then covered it with some small branches and sprinkled a bit of snow on top.
I turned to the Village Chief and said,
"Village Chief, let's slaughter the chickens we brought and throw them on the snow."
"When the Wolf King arrives, we'll show it something fierce."
The Village Chief's eyes lit up at this.
"That's settled then!"
Just as we finished setting up the trap, a low growl echoed from afar.
The Wolf King was coming.
Its growl grew closer, filling the valley with a suffocating sense of pressure.
I stood beside the trap, gripping a chain tightly in my hand, feeling a bit uneasy inside.
The villagers gathered behind me, each one too tense to even breathe.
"Tian Qi, is this trap effective?"
The Village Chief leaned in, his voice trembling.
I turned to him and smiled, trying to sound calm.
"Don't worry, Village Chief.
No matter how powerful the Wolf King is, it won't escape our trap."
