The voices of the two gradually faded away. I curled up, realizing that I was merely an extra in this unfolding drama. Fragments of dreams fell to the ground, quietly shattering like my own fate.
The "Furnace Cauldron" sent out from my home had all gone silent, extinguishing their soul lamps within a year. Chiyan Mountain was barren, covered in a sea of crimson. The air was thick with the pungent smell of sulfur. I was told I could only stay on Feizhou and not move around recklessly.
"You... you stay put and don’t run around, or you’ll regret it!" The female disciple spoke harshly but secretly handed me a bottle of Revitalizing Pill. I silently accepted the small vial and mouthed a thank you to her.
After a long while, a sudden commotion erupted outside. "Hurry! Run!" Then came a tremor that shook Feizhou violently.
"Not good! It’s coming after us!" a disciple shouted in panic. The sounds of crashing and screaming mixed together in chaos. I huddled in the corner, gripping the ship's railing tightly, peering through a small window to catch a glimpse of what was happening outside.
A massive python soared into view before Feizhou, with an indistinct black figure perched atop its head. The giant serpent lunged forward, shattering the defensive barrier and wrapping itself around Feizhou with a sickening creak.
The runes on Feizhou's outer shell flickered as cracks spread like spiderwebs, threatening to tear the vessel apart at any moment. The disciples of Wu Yuan Sect turned pale; in this situation, they were utterly powerless to fight back, barely managing to keep themselves steady.
The disciple controlling Feizhou trembled as he shouted, " Senior Brother Chen, it’s no use… we can’t hold on! Feizhou is going to break apart!"
"Stop!" Gu Chen shouted over the howling winds. "Esteemed elder, I am a disciple of Wu Yuan Sect and did not mean to offend you. We will withdraw from Chiyan Mountain. Please have mercy!"
“ Spirit Flame Fruit, it's mine! And this Feizhou, you can leave it behind.” The shadow lightly tapped the python's head with his toes, halting its attack.
“This Feizhou is already damaged. If the senior does not mind, there is a treasure on the Feizhou that I would like to offer as an apology.”
“A treasure?”
“Go bring Bai Ning out!”
Gu Chen's voice trembled slightly, laced with an almost imperceptible excitement.
I was roughly dragged out of the cabin by two disciples and shoved onto the deck. The dizziness from the swaying ship caused me to stumble and fall to the ground.
“Senior, this is a Supreme Water Spiritual Root Furnace Cauldron. It's a small token of apology; please accept it.”
Gu Chen's clear and determined voice rang out again.
As soon as he spoke, although some disciples showed complex expressions, they still echoed his sentiments, pleading with Demonic Cultivator for their lives.
I understood the implications of their words and abruptly turned to Gu Chen.
“Gu Chen!”
A surge of pain shot through me like an electric shock, but all I could manage to utter were two words.
“Bai Ning, don’t be ungrateful.”
Gu Chen looked down at me, warningly, as if he were doing this for my own good.
“Take it. Now get lost.”
I heard Demonic Cultivator's low voice beside me, along with Gu Chen's sigh of relief.
In the next moment, I felt my body lifted off the ground, swept away by a powerful force.
When I regained consciousness, I found myself bound to a stalactite in a cave. Not far away, a boy with a human upper body and a serpent's tail was cooking his own tail in a hot spring.
The tail looked neither like a snake nor a dragon; it resembled something half-finished.
“Oh, you're awake,” he said, turning around and poking my face with the steaming tip of his tail, which was both hot and painful.
“Are you Bai Ning?”
I didn’t respond.
"Not talking? You little snack, Water Spirit Root, I could eat you in one bite, do you believe that?" The tip of the tail gently poked my forehead.
