As soon as they entered, they were taken aback to see Chang Qing and the others.
"What are you doing here? Yang Changqing, you're alive!" Zheng Yingsha couldn't help but mock. In her mind, Yang Changqing and Li Jun were reckless enough to end up dead outside. She never expected to find them alive and well, enjoying hot pot.
Xu Caiwei couldn't resist licking her lips at the sight of the fragrant hot pot bubbling with vegetables.
"Hello, Uncle, Aunt." She recognized Yang Father and Yang Mother and greeted them directly.
"Caiwei, where are your parents? Aren't they with you?" Yang Father wanted to ask what the Xu Family was all about—did they look down on his son or something?
"They're probably on their way to the base too." Xu Caiwei's expression dimmed as she lowered her head.
Chang Qing wasn't surprised to run into Xu Caiwei; they had been stopping frequently during their journey, lingering for several days at a time. However, hearing her say that Father Xu and Xu Mother might be on their way to the base made him realize that Xu Caiwei hadn't returned to reunite with her parents but had instead set off north with her classmates.
"System, what's the situation with the Xu Family?" The system had recently gone to Nancheng for gossip, so it likely knew something.
"The Xu Family? They've long since turned into zombies. They didn't have much food stored up, and after holding out for over ten days without anything to eat, they went out looking for food. Unfortunately, the kids cried and caused a ruckus, attracting a horde of zombies, and that was it for them," the system explained succinctly.
In the original plot, Brother Xu had caused quite a bit of trouble for the original protagonist. On their journey north, he would demand this and that, throwing tantrums at every opportunity, which often attracted zombies. Even Li Jun lost his life because of his stubbornness. It was surprising that simply deciding to leave Xu Caiwei behind led to the downfall of the entire Xu Family. It seemed that as long as one didn’t meddle unnecessarily, the protagonist's halo couldn’t guarantee safety for everyone. Chang Qing chuckled inwardly.

"You guys are from that team, right?" he pointed to the adjacent room. "There was a bit of a conflict with them earlier; you should hurry over so they don't misunderstand you."
It was essentially a direct dismissal. Although he spoke politely, both of them could tell, and their faces turned pale with anger. Without saying a word, they turned and walked into the adjacent room.
"Come eat, come eat!" Yang Mother called out, inviting everyone to sit down and serving each person a large bowl of rice.
"It smells so good," Li Jun remarked. If it weren't for the other Ability users living next door, he would have thought they were camping out in the wild.
"As the saying goes, everything tastes good when you're hungry. I feel like this hot pot is even better than the delicacies we had at the Imperial Cuisine Pavilion," Yang Father mused. So much had changed in this apocalypse; who would have thought that people would fight over who got to use a space first? Nowadays, they were even willing to risk their lives for a bucket of water.
As they reminisced, they ate with their mouths full of spicy oil.
Meanwhile, things were not so harmonious next door. There were over a dozen of them, and although they had collected quite a bit of food, it didn't amount to much when divided among themselves. Each person was nibbling on a piece of bread and a chunk of beef jerky, feeling rather unsatisfied as the enticing aroma of hot pot wafted over from next door, making many stomachs growl.
"Damn it, life is so unfair! We're stuck eating this hard tack while they're enjoying hot pot next door," grumbled the Bearded Man, slamming his thigh in frustration.
"Ability users are not to be trifled with," sighed the man sitting beside him. Even Bai Bing had been defeated; what could they do?
At that moment, Bai Bing was quietly nibbling on her bread. She appeared calm and composed, showing no signs of having just faced defeat. She didn’t even try to hide the marks around her neck. Her fair skin contrasted sharply with the red marks that were quite alarming.
"Do you know the people next door?" she suddenly asked, turning her gaze toward Xu Caiwei.
Xu Caiwei opened her mouth but didn’t know where to start. After a moment's thought, she said, "Yang Changqing and Li Jun are both students from Nancheng University; we’re classmates. The older two are Yang Changqing's parents."
"Is that so?" Bai Bing's voice took on a teasing tone. "I remember that the Yang Family and the Xu Family have a marriage alliance; it must be you and Yang Changqing, Miss Xu. Yet it seems like your relationship isn't very good."
"Hmph, in college, he was just our Caiwei's shadow. Caiwei doesn't like him at all..." Zheng Yingsha interjected. She was quite displeased with Yang Changqing's earlier attitude. It turned out that his past kindness towards Caiwei was all an act. The affection of online big shots lasts for decades, even a lifetime, while he, Yang Changqing, had only pursued her for a year.
