What’s going on?
Ivan tossed a cigarette to himself, pulled up a chair, and lit it with a sigh. "These kids have lost their families and don’t want to go to the orphanage. They were sold to Sergei by the people inside."
Xu Li scoffed, shaking his head with a bitter smile. "What’s wrong with this world?"
"Isn’t that the truth?" Ivan looked at the faces across from him, his heart aching. The youngest child was even a year or two younger than his granddaughter, Katyusha, yet they no longer trusted those people. As soon as they heard they were being sent back, they cried desperately.
"Misha, look."
He shrugged at Xu Li, who was lost in thought while smoking. The entire office fell silent. After a long moment, Xu Li stubbed out his cigarette and stood up. He walked over to pick up a boy and girl around seven or eight years old and smiled at the slightly older children. "Let’s go home with Dad."
The children quickly got up and waved goodbye to Ivan, whose eyes were slightly red. They filed out of the office in an orderly manner. Ivan instructed his nephew and several young men from the village to take the kids in a police car.
"Are you guys not coming? Do you want to wait for the village chief to return?"
Yisha and some other women helping out stood by the kitchen sink, watching the young men busying themselves in Xu Li's blue work robes, wielding ladles with surprising skill. They couldn’t help but tease them.
The young men held their breath, determined to prove themselves through action, so they worked extra hard. They had been following the village chief for two or three years now and had learned how to handle things during village feasts; how could they not know what to do?
"Hey, Yevgeny, are you going to be limping like that forever?"
Larry joked without any restraint, causing everyone else to laugh. Yevgeny shot him a glare. "Little Rabbit, just wait until I’m healed; you’ll see what I do to you!"
"Hey, I’m just joking!"
The young man quickly pulled out a cigarette he usually saved for special occasions and lit it for himself. "Why are you so petty?"
Yevgeny rolled his eyes as he hobbled over and sat down next to Kozilov and the other troublemakers from the village. They immediately leaned in closer. "Big Brother Yevgeny, tell us what happened this time! How did you get hurt?"
"Didn’t they say anything?"
Seeing everyone shake their heads, Yevgeny paused for a moment before slowly shaking his head again. "If they didn’t say anything, I shouldn’t either; otherwise, the village chief will beat me up when he returns. You don’t know—"
Just thinking about Xu Li’s calm demeanor made him shiver despite his blood-stained hands. "If you really want to know, it’s better to wait until the village chief comes back. But I will warn you: he will be bringing some kids back with him."
He glanced at these troublemakers and said slowly, "These kids are all very unfortunate. The village chief will take special care of them. You’d better not stir up trouble; if the village chief finds out, I can assure you that getting whipped would be the least of your worries."
"Is it that serious?"
As they exchanged glances with each other, Alexei's eldest son Sakhalov burst in with an excited expression. "Big news! The village chief just got home! He said he has gained a son and a daughter—each one looks really good!"
"Come here, come here," Zhukov and Valentin pulled Sakhalov aside. Larryf and the others hurried over. Kozilov, being his uncle, took on the role of an elder and asked, "Nephew, what have your father and the others been up to? It's been over a month since they left."
"Oh, my dad and the others went with the village chief to kill someone."
