"Hey, Uncle, you're back?"
Xu Li had just arrived at the village entrance when he was greeted by his father, Zhukov, and others, who were all smiles as they gathered around him, holding children. They pressed their faces against the glass of the Mighty Chariot, peering inside. Xu Li rolled down the window and handed a large box of firecrackers to Ivan, who was holding his little son. "Share these and don't block the way."
"Alright, thanks, Uncle!"
Da Mao and Little Rascal giggled as they made way, all together calling out to the Mighty Chariot, "Drive safely!"
Then they huddled together to divide their spoils. Valentin gestured towards Fang Nu at the Village Chief's House. "We only have a little here; it’s not enough for the kids. I just saw that the car seats and trunk were filled with all sorts of fireworks."
"When the village chief goes to cook in the cafeteria this afternoon, let’s take the kids to his house for a look."
Zhukov chuckled mischievously as he grabbed his share of over ten boxes of firecrackers and headed home with his daughter. Maria and her nieces and nephews were lounging on the sofa watching TV. When she saw him pull out so many firecrackers from his arms, she raised an eyebrow. "Did you waste money again? These firecrackers are expensive."
"I just got them from the village chief."
He handed two boxes to his daughter and distributed the rest to his nieces and nephews. The kids squealed with delight as they rushed off to play with the firecrackers. Xiao Lisa wriggled free from his embrace, clutching a small box in each hand as she wobbled out after them.
On Da Mao's side, fireworks were indeed quite pricey; usually, no one bought them except during the New Year when parents would grit their teeth and purchase some for their children.
As for Xu Li's fireworks, they were all sourced through Yuliya from Black River. As the Deputy Director of Bratsk Railway Bureau, arranging a few empty carriages for supplies to his family shop was perfectly reasonable and legal!
"I want to ride! I want to ride!"
Yekaterina wrapped her arms around her little brother's head, preventing her two uncles from taking him away. Xiao Qi and Xiao Ba didn’t mind; after all, Da Huang and Xiao Huang could ride by themselves. Once they reached the ranch, they would ride on smaller ponies—this made their niece envious.
Xu Weixia zipped up Angelina's jacket and adjusted her hat and scarf. The couple rode on Xiong Da while Kamila held onto her husband’s waist on Xiong Er as they leisurely headed towards the ranch. At home, they left behind Gas Can-like Large Dog and increasingly elderly Xiao Zhi to keep watch.
"Katyusha! Katyusha!"
Ivan waved over his second daughter. The little girl trotted over excitedly. Ivan set his son down on the ground and pointed towards Xu Jiaxi and Xu Jiatai, who had just entered the cafeteria. "Take your brother over there and ask them for some fireworks."
"I don’t want to!"
The little girl pouted and tilted her head. "He's clearly my brother; why do I have to ask our uncles?"
"Because they're older."
Ivan explained once again about family hierarchy as he kissed her forehead. "When New Year comes around, Daddy will take you both to Irkutsk for some fun—burgers, fries, and movies sound good? You let your brother play with the fireworks this morning; he hasn’t had a turn yet."
"Fireworks! Yay!"
The Little Ones clapped their hands excitedly, tugging at their sister’s sleeve with eager eyes. "Let’s go get fireworks!"
"Okay," Katyusha said as she took her brother's slightly cold hand and slowly approached Xu Jiaxi and Xu Jiatai with a hint of shyness. "Uncle."
"Mm."
