Bella happily ran into the living room and pounced into Qi Qin's arms, nuzzling against her. "Mom, big brother agreed!"
The plump woman smiled affectionately. "Isn't this what you wanted the most?"
Feeling a bit shy, Bella wiggled in Qi Qin's embrace before lying down on the sofa, resting her head on Qi Qin's lap. While dialing Kozilov, she playfully teased her nephew with her little hands. "Kozilov, my brother wants you to come over for dinner."
"Huh? Why would I need to go to your house for dinner?" Kozilov, still lingering at the Village Chief's House, sounded confused.
Bella pouted. "So, are you coming or not?"
"Wait for me; I'm on my way!" After hanging up the phone, Kozilov jumped up with a determined look. Xu Li rolled her eyes at his foolishness and got up to head to the bedroom. She grabbed two bottles of Meng Lan and two packs of Tian Xing, then asked Anna to fetch two large watermelons and some grapes from the cellar.
After packing everything into two red bags, she patted the young man's shoulder. "Alexei is just being stubborn. He wants to see if you're worthy of entrusting Bella to you. Go on and seize the opportunity."
"Hehehe, thank you, uncle and aunt!" The young man looked at the gifts with excitement and bowed deeply to his elders. Xu Li smiled as she lit a cigarette. "No worries; I'll just put it on your tab and deduct it from your salary later."
Kozilov blinked in surprise and gave the smiling village chief a playful nudge before heading out towards Alexei's house, mumbling to himself, "What a waste! I’ve been bragging about my uncle all day, and he’s such a stingy old man."
"You really are something else; you even tease people while giving gifts," Anna said with an eye roll as she went to the kitchen to serve dishes. Xu Li chuckled and went to the study to call Eva for dinner.
"Hehehe, big brother!"
Kozilov arrived at Alexei's house with gifts in hand and brought water into the kitchen. "Sister Suzanna!"
"Have a seat; dinner is almost ready," Suzanna replied with a smile as she ladled beef into a soup bowl. Kozilov quickly helped serve the dishes, and soon enough, the family had him, an outsider, seated at their table. Alexei downed a shot of vodka and forked a piece of smoked sausage into his mouth. "Have you thought it through? Marriage is no joke."
"I have thought it through, big brother! As long as Bella doesn’t mind me, we can get married once we finish building our house this summer."
Kozilov grinned widely, excitement radiating from him. "The village chief also said that families who open separate accounts and live in the village will receive two cows, a pig, and ten sheep as gifts! All of this counts towards our Small Farm. Plus, I can get promoted; aside from my salary, there will be a year-end bonus just like my father's!"
Alexei poured himself another glass of liquor without responding. "I served eight years in Signal Flag; if it weren't for reaching retirement age, I would still be serving there."
Bella had always been timid and honest; she didn't like talking much and only focused on working hard. "The biggest regret in my life is towards Suzanna and my sister. If anyone dares to bully my sister—"
Before he could finish his sentence, Kozilov eagerly grabbed his drink with both hands. "You can break my legs!"
Alexei nodded seriously, while Suzanna, Bella, and Qi Qin were all amused by the antics of the little boy. Alexei's younger son, Uncle Andong, sat on a rough children's chair, clapping his small hands and making sounds that were a mix of giggles and babbles, though no one could quite make out what he was saying.
