"Uncle, I was wrong, I really was. Please help me."
Kozilov had been pestering Xu Li for the past couple of days, hoping he would speak well of him to Alexei. That Maozi was too ruthless. When they first arrived, they couldn't stand each other's arrogant demeanor, and a group of seven or eight people chased each other around the village.
"Hey, weren't you worried when you were flying the drone the day before yesterday?"
Xu Li shot him a glance that was more of a grimace than a smile, then took a drag from his cigarette and headed to the number three Cattle Shed. This year, they had sold all the Beef Cattle and even butchered over ten infertile female deer, which were snatched up by food lovers across China, making them quite a fortune.
Reindeer were rarely sold domestically; scarcity made them valuable.
"Brother, you're back!"
Bella greeted Alexei cheerfully as she held her little nephew, who was just over a year old. Alexei smiled and took his son from her arms, planting a kiss on his chubby cheek, the sweet scent of milk wafting from the little guy.
"What do you think of Kozilov?"
Bella cautiously observed her brother's expression. His reaction was beyond her expectations; he handed his son back to their mother and took Bella to the kitchen where his wife, Suzanna, was stewing beef. The couple exchanged a quick kiss.
Alexei finally lit a cigarette and took a slow drag. "Have you two gone all the way?"
"Huh? What step?"
Seeing her sister-in-law's confused expression, Suzanna chuckled and whispered a few words in her ear. Bella blushed and quickly shook her head. "No, no! He's very honest."
"Wow, who would have thought? This kid is actually quite decent," Alexei teased, but Suzanna playfully smacked him for his jest. "I actually think Kozilov is pretty good. When he first came here, even though you gave him a beating, he helped us build our house without hesitation. He works hard on the ranch too; he's much better than Zhukov and Lafu."
"I know all that! But my sister just asked me about him; I would have gone over and beaten him up already!"
He pulled his sister into an embrace and ruffled her hair. "You're still so young, sister. Are you really in such a hurry to get married?"
"Of course not!"
Bella shyly rubbed her cheek against her brother's clothing. "I just think Kozilov is nice. He buys whatever I want to eat. A while ago when we visited Aunt Anna's house, she brought out watermelon and grapes."
"I had some and they were so delicious! I wanted to bring some back for sister-in-law and Sakhalov but felt embarrassed. So I told him I wanted watermelon and grapes, and he went to Village Chief's House to ask Aunt Anna for two big watermelons and a huge bunch of grapes."
"And also..."
She broke away from her brother's embrace and glanced at Suzanna. "I don't want to leave you and sister-in-law either. Mom isn't in great health, and sister-in-law has to take care of Mom as well as Sakhalov, Sasha, and Uncle Andong; she has a lot on her plate."
"Kozilov said that next summer he will have Uncle Kolechkin help build houses on our vacant land here. That way I can help sister-in-law every day. Living in the village is quite nice; the elders are very kind, and our peers are great too."
My father passed away early, and I have been in the military all this time. The family has relied on you and Suzanna; my brother respects your choices.
Alexei ruffled his sister's hair and said, "Call him over to eat with us."
"Okay."
