Eva's voice called out from the study, and Xu Li shook his head as he made his way to the kitchen. He opened the cellar door and descended the stairs, picking a moderately sized new variety of watermelon, the Golden Heart. It was indeed delicious. After slicing it and inserting some sticks, he brought it to the study and placed it on the coffee table. Then he fetched a pair of nail clippers, sat down on the carpet, and began to trim Anna's toenails.
"Have you guys been to Irkutsk?"
"What happened?" Anna immediately perked up. "Is it Zhuo Ya or Peter? Did they mess up again?"
"This time it's Irina. The little girl just shot a drunkard," he explained. "You need to go talk to her."
After Xu Li recounted the situation, Anna and Eva fell silent for a moment, only exchanging glances and sighing in resignation. However, they didn’t say anything further. After finishing the watermelon, Eva pressed her husband down onto the lounge chair. "Are you happy that we won't be around for a few days?"
"Maybe a little," he chuckled.
Xu Li didn’t deny it; after all, they had been together for so long that they knew each other's little thoughts all too well. Eva playfully rubbed his cheek. "You bad guy, can’t you pretend to be a bit more reluctant?"
"It's not like we're going away for long—just a few days."
He pushed Eva's head down gently while his right hand slipped under Anna's shirt.
The matter was resolved quickly; Zhuo Ya and Irina were acting in self-defense. The drunkard who had been half-beaten by Zhuo Ya would face serious consequences. Anna and Eva decided it would be best for Irina to return to the ranch to clear her mind while Zhuo Ya would come back with Peter later.
"Uncle!"
As soon as Irina got out of the car, she rushed into Xu Li's arms. The group settled into the living room, with Anna going to prepare lunch while Eva returned to the bedroom to rest. Xu Li held Irina on the sofa and chatted for a while.
After lunch, he took her to the ranch, riding on Xiao Si as they strolled around. Irina was dressed in a colorful fur coat with matching high-top snow boots, her little face flushed from the cold wind, but she was reluctant to get down from her small mount.
Xu Li watched for a moment before deciding to check on the cattle shed when he noticed Lafu and Zhukov sneaking around outside a glass window, pressing their ears against the wooden wall to eavesdrop.
He took a drag from his cigarette and approached slowly. Although he couldn’t hear what was being said inside clearly, he saw Kolechkin’s boy hugging Alexei’s sister. Annoyed, he kicked both of them away.
Grabbing them by their ears, he dragged them into the cattle shed and gave each of them a kick on their behinds. "Eavesdropping without fear of getting caught? Go work!"
"Hey, Uncle!"
Lafu stepped forward and grabbed Xu Li's arm eagerly. "Can you ask around if there are any other pretty girls in our village like me?"
"Don't you have a mouth?"
Xu Li pulled his arm away and gave him a light shove. "Your mother is quite eloquent; let her help you find out."
He pulled out a cigarette and lit one up, noticing that both boys were staring at his cigarette pack. Rolling his eyes, he handed one to each of them. "Speaking of which, Alexei’s little sister is really quite something."
"It would be such a pity if she ends up marrying Kozilov!"
Lafu nodded in agreement, but Xu Li raised his foot as if to kick him. "Just look at yourself! You're as skinny as a bamboo pole. How can you compare yourself to Kozilov? He's only a year older than you. Look at how he works, then look at the two of you. And you still have the nerve to criticize others?"
"Get to work!"
Zhukov and Lafu, having managed to sneak some cigarettes, didn't care about being scolded. After all, they had grown up being reprimanded by the village chief since they were little. This was just another day for them.
