Aleksey stood in the clearing outside the Cattle Shed, flanked by over thirty burly men arranged in two rows. The first row consisted of the warriors Xu Li needed—seasoned veterans who had just retired from elite units. The second row was filled with those Boyka had pushed forward to win favor, each one robust and imposing.
"My name is Makarov," he declared. "This village is under my command. If you are willing to bring your families here to live, you will be one of us. I have always been generous to my own. The land has been cleared for you, and all the tools and materials you need for construction are ready."
As Xu Li walked back and forth in front of them, he continued, "I have prepared brand new household appliances for you—refrigerators, stoves, kitchenware, washing machines, and more—as a welcoming gift."
"What I need here are diligent workers who are ready to face danger when it arises. Aleksey, your group of sixteen will earn one hundred thousand rubles each month. I need you to patrol the mountains and forests. The others will earn eighty thousand rubles monthly, and by the end of the year, depending on the ranch's performance, each household could receive around two million rubles in bonuses."
"I must also make it clear that the three months of summer and the two months before the New Year are our busiest times at the ranch. Your women will also need to work here, earning sixty thousand rubles a month, with meals provided by the ranch."
Round tables were set up in the dining hall, where their families sat around them, gazing at the spread of food while listening to Xu Li's speech. Their eyes sparkled with hope for a new life. They knew that wages on Da Mao's side were not satisfactory, and this opportunity was rare. If their men dared to slack off, they would not hesitate to kick them out rather than let this chance slip away!
Soon after, their men entered the dining hall under the watchful eye of the formidable village chief and returned to their families' sides. Xu Li clapped his hands together: "This meal is a traditional welcome feast from me to you all. Eat heartily; there's plenty more if you need it."
The new villagers eagerly dug into their food. Xu Li observed the children at the table—some barely old enough to walk—and couldn't help but marvel at how many children these young couples had before even reaching thirty. Despite their fertility, he wondered why the population never seemed to grow.
After they finished eating, arrangements were made for them to settle into homes within the village. Each family had a vacant room available for them; welcoming them was no trouble since they would all be part of the community moving forward.
The next morning, everyone in the village was busy. The teenagers who had returned from vacation either took over their parents' jobs helping feed cattle and sheep or went to assist in constructing wooden cabins in a clearing north of the ranch.
Zhuo Ya rode her pure black stallion with Lisa in her arms while Irina rode her own moose named Xiao Xiao Bai. They helped tend to the sheep herd while Anna and Eva, both pregnant and acting as kindergarten teachers, took care of twenty or so little ones.
The older children didn’t require supervision; they ran around with other kids from the village while Xiao Bai and Xiong Da Xiong Er kept an eye on them. Xu Li felt reassured watching them; he knew these three were clever enough to manage things well. After taking a stroll around the ranch, he joined in helping build wooden cabins. It was July—the hottest month in Siberia—and assisting villagers with their homes also meant helping clear land for farming and planting vegetables.
Peter didn’t need to waste energy on training anymore; every day was spent tirelessly hauling wood until he was thoroughly exhausted.
