"Where's the horse?" Miwofu shouted from a distance, urgency in his voice. Xu Li, looking quite flustered, regretted lending the car to someone else; now he had no vehicle left at home and had to run on foot to the nearest Cattle Shed.
Miwofu, confused and holding a cigarette, asked, "Village Chief, did a dog chase you?"
"Get lost!" Xu Li smacked him on the back of the head in annoyance. "I told you to bring the horse, what are you doing?"
With a look of grievance, Miwofu replied, "There are no horses left; they’ve all been taken by Uncle Andreev and the others. There are still seven or eight young horses in the stable, but you can't ride them."
"All the horses are gone?" Xu Li felt as if the sky was falling. Miwofu nodded. "Yeah, I don’t know what’s going on this year. Wild boars have been running rampant in the cornfields, and all our corn stalks have been uprooted. Your tiger and brown bear have been well-fed lately; there are still over ten heads frozen in the Icehouse."
"Let it all go to ruin!" He plopped down on the ground and lit up the cigarette Miwofu handed him. "Didn’t you attend Peter’s wedding?"
"Heh heh heh, I had to keep an eye on the Cattle Shed," Miwofu said as he sat beside Xu Li. "My mom took my sister and my wife with her. My dad is patrolling with Uncle Andreev. I’m going home to catch up on sleep; I’ll be switching shifts with my dad tonight."
"By the way, Village Chief," the young man looked at Xu Li somewhat awkwardly. "Are we short on hands at the ranch?"
"It’s manageable for now. Once all the corn is stored away, we’ll have some downtime. Are you looking to introduce someone?"
"My brother-in-law offended his employer recently and is currently job hunting," Miwofu explained. After serving in the military, his brother-in-law worked as security at a bar. The bar owner was always on the lookout for pretty girls, and when his brother-in-law's girlfriend came to visit him at work, she caught the owner's eye. This led to his brother-in-law getting beaten up by the owner and dragging two fellow veterans who were there for interviews into trouble as well.
"Let’s discuss this later. Give me your walkie-talkie."
"Oh." The young man got up to fetch his walkie-talkie. Xu Li took it and switched channels. "Andreev, can you hear me?"
"What’s up?"
Xu Li flicked away his cigarette butt. "Forget about the Cornfield for now; you all need to scatter! Oleg and Nikola took my tank out for a joyride—it's armed with live rounds! I'm worried those two will get into serious trouble!"
"Are you out of your mind, Makarov? You left live ammunition in the vehicle?"
Meanwhile, Andreev, leisurely patrolling on horseback along with the other men equipped with walkie-talkies, felt a cold sweat break out. He slapped his horse's rear and scattered off to search for the Village Chief's House. If anyone happened to be caught in the blast radius of the Cannonball, the entire village would hold that unfortunate soul's family responsible!
"Ah? Is there no more ammunition?"
Not hearing Xu Lao's report that he had finished loading, Angelina looked at her husband with confusion. Xu Weixia held a Cannonball in his hands, his limbs trembling slightly. He grinned at his wife, revealing a wide smile: "Darling, I have live ammunition!"
Live ammunition?
With a screech, the Steel Behemoth came to an abrupt stop behind a small mound. The three of them huddled closer together. The Cannonball in Xu Weixia's hands had a slender warhead, unlike the training blanks they were used to. This realization made their breaths quicken with a mix of excitement and fear.
