Sitting on the steps at the entrance, the old man chatted away about the happenings in Jinling. "Come on, Lao Si, bring that watermelon and sit down with us," he called out. Beside him, Xu Li silently smoked a cigarette, gazing up at the star-filled night sky, lost in thought.
"Uncle! Uncle!" Irina ran out from the house, joyfully jumping onto his back. "Big Brother and the others won first place again!"
"Really?" Xu Li smiled. "That's just normal; it would be strange if they didn’t win first."
He didn't like it when Irina sometimes called him that, but the clever little girl naturally referred to him as Uncle.
Lao Si and the old man wanted to continue their previous conversation, but a kick to the backside interrupted them. Turning around, they saw Lao San waving at them with a smirk before heading back inside.
"Dad."
"Hmm?"
Zhuo Ya sat on the steps. "You still haven’t let it go? Or should I say..."
"What is there to let go of?" Xu Li shook his head and sighed. "How old is Dad now? If he still harbored hatred for them, he wouldn’t have allowed Lao Si and Lao Huaxia in the first place. He just doesn’t want to see them."
"Uncle?"
"Hmm?"
Xu Li turned to Irina beside him. The little girl pouted and thought for a moment. "Actually, your stepmother is better than my stepfather."
"My stepfather only knows how to drink. If things don’t go his way, he hits my mom. His two kids bully me every day, and the things my stepfather says to me are really hurtful."
"Are you trying to make me reconcile with them?"
Irina shook her head. "That’s not what I mean. I think it’s important. I feel like after all these years you haven’t gone back, this time only Lao Si and the old man returned. Your father will miss you and feel sad."
Misha, Anna, and Eva also came into the yard, squatting in front of Xu Li and touching his rough hands. Anna smiled and asked, "Do you remember what Mom said before she left?"
"Always hold a heart full of gratitude when facing this world!"
Those were the last words spoken to him by his mother-in-law, that kind-hearted Slavic lady who cared most about her son-in-law as she departed this world.
"Dad, I understand," Xu Weihua said as he hung up the phone. He got up, slipped on his slippers, and covered the sleeping Kamila with a blanket before heading into the bathroom to wash up. While he was brushing his teeth, Kamila sleepily walked in and wrapped her arms around his waist.
"Did Uncle ask you to come back?" she murmured.
"My dad plans to stay in Huaxia for a while. Next month is my grandfather's tenth birthday."
