Wow, it smells amazing.
As soon as the door opened, Angelina caught a whiff of the unique sour aroma of Sweet and Sour Ribs. The middle-aged man who followed her in, along with Yelena who was helping carry things, looked somewhat surprised. They hadn’t expected this Little Guy to actually know how to cook.
After Xu Weixia finished cleaning the frying pan, he wiped his hands and untied his apron. Since the apartment was small, the dining table was set up in the kitchen. He arranged the dishes and nervously glanced at the middle-aged man across from him. “Hello, Uncle. My name is Nikola.”
“Hello there, young man.” The middle-aged man shook hands with Xu Weixia. “I’m Angelina’s father, Vladimir Alexander Putin. Just call me Uncle Alexander. You’re quite a handsome boy, but you shouldn’t be so shy all the time. Boys should be a bit more confident.”
“I understand, Uncle.”
Xu Weixia was pulled to sit beside Alexander, while Yelena and Angelina sat across from them. Alexander poured himself a glass of vodka and shook the bottle at Xu Weixia. “Want some?”
The young man quickly shook his head. “I don’t drink alcohol, Uncle.”
“Dad, try this! It’s delicious!” Angelina quickly forked a piece of Sweet and Sour Pork for her father. Yelena took a piece for herself and tilted her head slightly in surprise. “This is really good.”
“Hehe, thank you for the compliment, Auntie.”
Xu Weixia smiled shyly and then focused on eating. Angelina kicked him gently on the shin and winked at him while glancing at her father. Xu Weixia immediately became alert; this little girl was up to something!
“Nikola, you’ve seen our living conditions.”
Her cheeks puffed up like a hamster as she swallowed her food and said, “You keep saying you want to marry a rich oligarch’s daughter in the future, but look who’s got you now! Hmph! From now on, you’ll just have to work with me to earn money.”
“Oh ho! This young man has quite the ambition!”
Alexander tilted his head with a half-smile while Yelena stifled a laugh, keeping her head down as she continued eating. Xu Weixia felt uncomfortable under Alexander's gaze and awkwardly explained, “I was just joking with Angelina! A rich oligarch's daughter wouldn’t be studying at our public school!”
His forced smile looked more like he was about to cry. Alexander withdrew his gaze and downed his drink in one gulp. Xu Weixia hurriedly filled his glass again. “Uncle, please eat your food; drinking on an empty stomach isn’t good for your health.”
“Aren’t you the one who said you don’t drink? And yet you know that drinking on an empty stomach is bad for your health?”
Alexander patted Xu Weixia on the shoulder. “Your Uncle dislikes children who lie.”
“I really don’t drink alcohol, Uncle.”
Xu Weixia shrank back slightly; this uncle gave him an indescribable sense of pressure. His half-smile seemed more intimidating than his own father’s stern face: “You are really good-looking, unlike my dad and brother; their faces are all hairy and ugly.” I’ve known this since I was little because they always try to convince me otherwise.
“Really?”
“Mhm!”
Xu Weixia nodded vigorously: “You are really good-looking, unlike my dad and brother; their faces are all hairy and ugly.” He didn’t drink alcohol himself either unless guests came over and he had to join them for a couple of drinks; usually, he didn’t touch alcohol at all.
"That's a good habit; you should keep it up," Alexander said, pulling his gaze away. "Let's eat. I want to taste your cooking."
He speared a piece of Sweet and Sour Pork and stuffed it into his mouth. After chewing a couple of bites, his eyes lit up. "Not bad, kid. You've got some skills in the kitchen. Who taught you?"
"You're really good-looking, unlike my dad and brother; their faces are all hairy and ugly."
