Xu Li took out his phone and called Ivan. "Brother, there's a young man from our village who got into a fight and was locked up. His name is Ivanov. He was just caught, and the father of the other party is a police officer. Can you help talk to them? Spend a little more money to get him out. Their demands aren't too unreasonable; let's just settle the case. I'll transfer the money to you."
"Okay, thanks, brother."
After hanging up, he stood up and stomped his feet. "It's all good now, Aleksei. Take some time to check on your son; he shouldn't be wandering around the city all day. Finding a good girl to marry and settle down is better than anything else. We can talk about money later."
"Thank you."
Aleksei hugged Xu Li, who said nothing more. He glanced at the time, tidied up his things, and headed home. A few men continued to tease the honest man, while Aleksei smiled in agreement, feeling grateful to Xu Li. If it weren't for his invitation to come live in the village, his life would surely be much worse.
As soon as he arrived at the yard, he saw Eva standing at the door practicing her singing voice, alternating between falsetto and chest voice with ease. He locked his car and approached her, spinning her around a couple of times before kissing her cheek. "Where's Anna?"
"She should be studying."
Eva pushed her husband aside to continue her practice, and Xu Li chuckled. "Everyone else wakes up early to practice their voices; you insist on doing it in the afternoon."
"Mind your own business, you rascal! I'm preparing dinner."
Eva playfully shoved her husband into the house and continued her vocal exercises. Xu Li shook his head, changed his clothes, and walked into the kitchen. He opened the fridge to check the available ingredients and sighed before taking out his phone. "Alexander, when you go shopping tomorrow, please bring me some fresh vegetables and buy extra water."
After hanging up, he took out the remaining vegetables from the fridge, thought for a moment about pairing them with some meat for two dishes, and decided to cook a pot of Northeast rice for dinner. He paused in front of the freezer corner and grabbed some pork offal along with scallions, ginger, and garlic for a stew.
He also washed several potatoes, tossed them into a pot with water to boil, and set them aside to cool for their two pet hamsters' dinner. While he was busy preparing food, Little Guy waddled over with a quacking sound. The little duckling was not even three months old yet but already showed signs of being mischievous as it nibbled on his pant leg while playing by itself.
Bending down to pat Little Guy's somewhat scrawny belly, Xu Li shook his head and took out a large can of milk. While it was still warm, he cleaned a bottle and filled it up before handing it over to Little Guy, who happily rolled on the ground and eagerly sucked from the bottle.
By six o'clock in the evening, dinner was ready. The three of them chatted happily over their meal while Xu Li fed their two hamsters as well as a pair of dogs from Boiler Room. He also cut off a small piece of pig liver for Little Guy before sitting on the sofa with it in his arms, lighting a cigarette as he fed Little Guy bit by bit.
Anna and Eva cleaned up the dishes together before all three headed to the back room. Once everything was set up and music started playing, Anna's slightly hoarse voice began to resonate:
"Dragon bone ship body, sailing through endless waves,
From barren peaks to lush greens.
Every view is a new beginning,
Awaiting my rise to rule over mankind!"
Xu Li followed the rhythm of the music, lightly tapping his right fist against his left palm as his deep voice slowly joined in:
"The ship sails away from the fjord's cold currents..."
The cold crow flies over my vast territory.
War songs, legends, everything is destined.
I am both the steadfast shield and the piercing spear!
