Why did you come back so early?
Li Yanhong had just opened the door and turned around when he paused and looked at Xu Li behind Xu Haigui. "Who are you?"
"I'm just here to grab something."
Xu Li squeezed past Xu Haigui and Li Yanhong, heading straight to his room. He brushed his fingers over the thin layer of dust on his desk, pursing his lips as he pulled out a photo from under the glass. The family portrait had been torn, leaving only himself and Qi Qin. He carefully placed a small wooden sword and two tiny plastic toy guns into his pocket like treasures.
Without looking back, he left the apartment. In the living room, the couple sat quietly on the sofa for a long time until Li Yanhong finally pulled off his face mask, disbelief written all over his face. "Was that Ali?"
"Yeah."
"His face?"
Xu Haigui silently lit a cigarette and took a drag, exhaling slowly after a while. "He got caught by a bear; there’s hardly any good meat left on him."
Just thinking about how Xu Li had stripped off his shirt in the police mediation room to reveal that shocking scar made even the two officers gasp in shock.
"Isn’t he supposed to be in school? Are there bears in the big city too?"
Xu Haigui ignored him, continuing to smoke with an absent-minded air. After a long pause, he stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray. "I’ll go to the bank later and transfer some money to the kid."
"How much?"
The moment money was mentioned, Li Yanhong became alert. Xu Haigui replied casually, "Ten thousand."
"What? Are you crazy?"
Li Yanhong immediately jumped up from the sofa. "I don’t agree! With that much cash withdrawn, how are we supposed to keep our business running?"
"That money was earned by Yulan and me together. Now that Yulan is gone, that money belongs to Ali. I’m just letting you know."
Xu Haigui stood up, ready to head to the study, but Li Yanhong grabbed his left arm. "He’s still a child! Giving him that much money—aren’t you afraid he’ll go astray?"
"That’s his own business. I have to give him this money; whether he can handle it is up to him."
"What about Xiao Lei’s side?"
"What do you think?"
Li Yanhong released Xu Haigui's arm and slowly sat back down on the sofa. "Well, this way is fine too; we’ve given what we should give. That kid won’t have any excuse to come back for inheritance anymore!"
The old house was located in Qinhuai District, just over twenty minutes from Ba Yi Hospital. The two-bedroom old place needed a thorough clean-up. He found a renovation company and explained his requirements when the person in charge arrived.
"My wife is almost seven months pregnant now, so I don’t want anything too complicated. I need all the walls and ceilings covered with panels, and please clean up the rooms thoroughly as well. Wei Jian will replace them with warm-colored tiles; I want everything changed—the bathtub, toilet, sink—everything! And also replace all the kitchen appliances and cabinets. How much will it cost?"
The person in charge smiled broadly upon hearing the request, saying, "Xu, don’t worry. We will definitely use top-brand materials for your renovation, ensuring there are no formaldehyde or anything like that. You can choose the appliances yourself; we just need to make some adjustments to the space. The price might be a bit on the higher side."
Xu Li handed him a cigarette and replied, "I'll come back tomorrow morning. You prepare a comprehensive quote by then, and if it’s reasonable, we’ll get started."
Before the person in charge could respond, Xu leaned in to meet his gaze. "However, let me make one thing clear: if you dare..."
