"Eat well, look at how thin you are," Xu Haigui said as he served a few shrimp to his picky son. Li Yanhong watched with a smile, thinking that her son resembled her, with those big eyes and small mouth; he would surely grow up to be a handsome boy. She added some vegetables to his plate, reminding him that a balanced diet requires both meat and vegetables.
"I don't want to eat that!" Xu Lei pouted, pushing the vegetables off the table. Just as Xu Haigui was about to scold him, his phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID and raised an eyebrow before getting up to head to the study.
After answering, there was a long silence on the line. Just as he was about to break the awkwardness, the voice on the other end spoke first: "Bring your household registration book and the property deed for the old house tomorrow. I'll be waiting for you at the police station in the west of the city."
"You've come? Why aren't you at home?" Xu Haigui frowned, reproaching his eldest son. The voice on the phone was low and hoarse: "That's your home, not mine. The old house was given to my mother by my grandfather. If my mother doesn't want it, then it's mine. I'll wait for you at ten o'clock tomorrow morning at the police station."
Beep beep beep.
Listening to the busy tone on his phone, Xu Haigui felt a pang of discomfort. If it hadn't been for his wife's cancer diagnosis leading him to drink away his sorrows, things might have turned out differently. He sighed and returned to the dining room, where he downed half a glass of wine in one go.
Li Yanhong noticed her husband’s displeasure but wisely chose to ignore it. Meanwhile, Xu Li had just hung up and brought her twins along with their mother-in-law to a restaurant for dinner. The tall and curvy foreign twins were quite a sight; many diners and waitstaff stared at them, making the sisters feel self-conscious.
Natasha looked around at the lavishly decorated restaurant and tightened her grip on her old wallet in her pocket. How much would it cost to eat here?
"Excuse me, how many are you?" A young girl behind the cash register stuttered as she looked at Xu Li, who was tall and muscular with scars on his face.
Xu Li intended to smile reassuringly so that the cashier wouldn't worry, but as he did so, the scar on his face twisted with his smile, making the cashier even more anxious.
"Do you have a private room? There are four of us."
"Yes, yes!" The cashier quickly nodded and called over a nearby waiter. Xu Li took hold of his sisters' slightly cold hands and led Natasha into the private room. He glanced at the menu: cold cucumber salad, century egg tofu, sliced cold beef, roasted duck, chopped duck, and salted duck—one of each please—along with one order of custard buns and one order of purple sweet potato buns. For drinks, fresh-squeezed orange juice.
After noting down their order, the waiter left the room. Natasha patted Xu Li's hand: "Misha, you're ordering so much; we won't be able to finish it all! This place is so upscale; it must be expensive."
"Don't worry about it; just enjoy your meal," Xu Li replied confidently as he patted his slightly bulging pocket. He hadn't spent recklessly in Irkutsk; living in a village had allowed him to save nearly ten thousand yuan after living frugally for almost a year with five thousand yuan monthly expenses. The prices in Jinling weren't high; this money was enough for them to live comfortably for some time.
"If it's not enough, just tell Mom. Dad gave me a silver card; we can use that if we need more," Natasha said, still feeling a bit uneasy.
"Okay, Mom," Xu Li grinned.
Soon after, the waiter pushed in a cart filled with six cold dishes and set them on the table. Xu Li poured orange juice for Natasha and the twins before starting to serve them food: "Mom, try some authentic Hua Xia Cuisine."
"Delicious!"
