Andrei lit a cigarette and knelt down, teaching him how to disassemble a fully sealed bullet box and load bullets into the magazine. Although Xu Li lacked physical strength, he quickly learned about things that interested him. He skillfully chambered a round, ignoring his father-in-law's twitching mouth, and began another round of shooting.
If it weren't for Anna and Eva arriving in response to the gunfire, Xu Li believed he could play all day. He closed the safety and tossed the local specialties behind him, stuffing two magazines into his pocket, grinning like a fool as he headed home with the bullet box.
"I'll be working at the ranch with Natasha; you take care at home," he said.
"Don't worry, Dad, I have this," Xu Li replied, grinning as he shook the gun strap on his shoulder. Andrei twitched his mouth and went to the ranch with Natasha. As soon as his father-in-law and mother-in-law arrived, he plopped down under the apple tree next to Da Hei's doghouse, propping the local specialties on the ground. He patted Da Hei's head and said, "Hey there, little buddy, you better be nice to your brother from now on, or I'll use my gun on you."
Da Hei seemed to understand him; it rolled its eyes and turned away from this fool. Xu Li didn't mind; he filled a bucket with cooled corn mush, cleaned out the big pot, and prepared food for Huahua and the others.
After everything was ready, he touched the local specialties with satisfaction. Anna and Eva were eating beef while looking at Xu Li like he was an idiot, shaking their heads in unison as they held hands and headed out of the yard. Xu Li hurriedly stopped them: "What are you two doing?"
Eva turned her head and stuck out her tongue at him. "We're going to find wild food."
Dad said there are wolves around here; he doesn't want you running around.
Xu Li stepped in front of the sisters. Eva pouted and glared at him: "I want to go! I have Huahua and Da Hei with me; I'm not afraid of wolves."
Saying this, she returned to the yard and unfastened all the chains from around the necks of several Caucasian dogs. The smallest among them was Xiao Huang, weighing about a pound, while Da Hei was definitely over thirty or forty pounds—intimidating indeed.
"Hmph," Eva said as she led her pack of dogs out confidently. Anna bounced along behind her. Xu Li raised his hand to stop the sisters but worried that without a few big dogs by his side, he might get into trouble himself. So he simply closed the yard gate and followed them: "Wait for me!"
"Why are you following us, coward?" Eva teased him with a smile.
Xu Li didn't bother arguing with his wife, who had the mentality of a child. He grinned widely: "We're best friends! So I want to play with you."
"That's more like it!"
Eva happily hugged Xu Li and slightly lowered her head to pout her lips. They quickly shared a kiss before holding hands again under the watchful eyes of their big dogs as they headed toward the distant forest. Holding one sister's hand in each of his own, Xu Li felt incredibly happy looking at their innocent smiles.
The Caucasian dogs frolicked around them, sniffing here and digging there, while Huahua followed leisurely by their side, occasionally looking up to survey their surroundings.
The sisters led Xu Li straight into the depths of the forest as if they knew their destination. Holding onto the local specialties tightly in his hands, Xu Li felt somewhat nervous as he scanned his surroundings; after all, this was a forest where wild beasts lurked. He didn't believe that a few Caucasian dogs could take on a tiger or a brown bear.
"Let's head back; we've been out long enough," he suggested after struggling across a ravine.
The sisters merely waved at him without stopping. After what felt like an eternity—Xu Li was nearly exhausted—the sisters continued moving quickly ahead. He sat down on a fallen tree: "I can't go on anymore; let's take a break."
The Caucasian dogs also panted heavily with their tongues hanging out, glancing between the sisters and Xu Li with a hint of disdain in their eyes.
